Appel Farms making plans to build new storefront, may offer new deli

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | January 4, 2013

Appel Farms at 6605 Northwest Road has submitted plans to Whatcom County Hearing Examiner to build a new storefront that would include a deli.

In a Facebook post, Ruth Appel  said the deli would include serving espresso drinks in a drive-thru format. The farm itself focuses on artisan cheese.

According to the Hearing Examiner documents, the deli would also have a 688 square foot dining area.

Is coffee really the ultimate growth industry?

  2. Barb V. says:

Would someone please open a real Italian deli. To me a deli is not sandwiches and chips. This county could really use one. Wish I had the money to do it.

  3. Motorcyclerider says:

If I’m not mistaken, “drive-thru” is virtually forbidden outside our citys, in an over-regulatory move to encourage “pedestrian friendly neighborhood centers”.

    Is this a county address?

I live across the street from the Appel Farms, and I have no problem with the expansion. Why should people not living in the city have to drive to the city to get an espresso. The county and decision that affect the county properties would stop being controlled by the people living in Bellingham. I bet if you asked 100 people on a street in downtown Bellingham, they wouldn’t even know where the Appel Farm is.

The new store will be a cheese shop. I’m sorry for the misunderstanding but the post was intended for our customers and “fans” who are familiar with our store and know that we are simply working to improve our customer service. If I had realized that it might be published in the Herald, I certainly would have done a better job of explaining.

We understand that people have busy lives so we are hoping to build our cheese shop close to the road, with a drive thru dairy to make it easier and more comfortable for our customers. We would also like to serve coffee and have a very small deli (sorry Barb, not what you were hoping for). I hope that clears up some of the confusion.

Motorcylerider: I hadn’t heard of any restrictions for a drive thru, I hope I’m not missing something!

  6. Hi Ruth,

Thanks for your response addressing some of the questions. I’m always on the lookout for business news/announcements, and Facebook is one of the places I check regularly for BizBlog posts. This isn’t something I’ve put in the printed paper yet. It is something I would be interested in putting in the paper at some point, but I’ll give you a call first to get the details.
