Washington Federal bank hires Haggen executive to lead Northwest region

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | January 26, 2010

I’ll post a story later today, but here are some details:

Washington Federal Inc. has named Thomas F. Kenney senior vice president and northern Washington regional executive for the company. Kenney will locate his office in downtown Bellingham and serve as the company’s senior executive here, according to a Washington Federal press release. He will be responsible for Washington Federal’s banking activities in Whatcom, Skagit and parts of Snohomish counties.

Kenney was an executive at Haggen, serving as vice president of finance for the past 13 years for its sister company, Briar Development Co. He previously spent 20 years in the banking industry and was on Washington Federal’s board of directors. He will step down from the board to take this position.

Is haggen going to build new storys anywhere since they got this new ceo

  2. Hi Bob,

Former Haggen CEO Dale Henley mentioned they were looking into the idea of building another Whatcom County store in November 2008, but there hasn’t been an annoucement about additional Haggen stores since then.

I have heard that haggens has been sold to the owners of freds is this true?

  4. Hi Trevor,

That seems to be a well-traveled rumor. Haggen officials haven’t been commenting on it, and there’s been no announcement from either company. Kroger (owner of Fred Meyer) is a publicly-traded company, so they are obligated to shareholders to announce if they’ve completed such a deal.

  5. trevor says:

why would haggen sale if they sell would hq stay in bham?

  6. Hi Trevor,

Other than a lot of talk in the area (all the way down to Seattle, based on the e-mail I’ve been getting) I’ve been looking around and haven’t seen/heard anything concrete that would indicate it’s true. So I haven’t been pondering the why.

The HQ does tend to disappear when a larger business buys another, although sometimes it is turned into a regional office.

If there has been no acquisition of Haggen by Kroger, then why do the Haggen cards scan, print and provide fuel rewards points at Fred Meyer? Also, why is Work Source (at the unemployment office)spreading the “rumor” that Haggen is now owned by Kroger?
