Whatcom County bankruptcy filings declined in August compared to the previous month, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Western District in Seattle.
Last month Whatcom County had 65 bankruptcy filings, down from 73 in July and 78 in June. Year-to-date, Whatcom County posted 563 bankruptcy filings, up 5.4 percent compared to the first eight months of 2009. In August 2009, Whatcom County had 63 bankruptcy filings.
The western district, which includes communities from Seattle north to the Canadian border, had 1,411 filings in August, down slightly from July but up 15 percent year-over-year. Business bankruptcies are also up in the western district: The first eight months of 2010 had 619 business bankruptcies, up 3.5 percent for the same period in 2009 and up 103.6 percent for the same period in 2008.
Skagit County posted 60 bankruptcies in August, down from 63 in July.
