Here are a couple pictures I took of the broken Alaskan ferry ramp. The ramp operator was taken to St. Joseph hospital when it broke.

For more background, here’s the story.

The first photo shows the buckled ramp. In the other, if you squint you can see the snapped, frayed cables.

Annotated notes on recent police logs and a jail booking

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | September 19, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

Here are some things that won’t make the paper, but have some news value.

According to Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks:

Kevin Andrew Davis, 27, jail booking number 219004. Davis was drinking  with a former girlfriend, 23, at a Maple Place home, in the Glenhaven area. They had dated for almost a year, but broke up in April. They got into an argument, and the girlfriend locked Davis out of the house. She went into another room when she heard him kick through the door. He barged in and choked her. When he realized someone had called 911, he ran out of the house. Sheriff’s deputies caught him within Bellingham city limits and booked him into jail on investigation of first-degree burglary, second-degree assault and malicious mischief.

The next annotation is my note.

Reported: Sep 18 2012 7:33AM
Location: 100 BLK CHUCKANUT DR N
Offense: MALICIOUS MISCHIEF
Case #: 12B34914

Vandals struck again at Fairhaven Park. They were unsuccessful in kicking out windows this time but did break another window and kill a wild bat that lived in the eaves.

Second time that pavilion has been targeted in a couple of weeks.

The following three cases were detailed by Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young.

Reported: Sep 18 2012 4:14PM
Location: 600 BLK W HOLLY ST
Offense: ASSAULT – Felony
Case #: 12B35024

Police responded to a possible assault at the above location. (V1) was found bleeding from cuts to his head and face. (V1) was heavily intoxicated and, at the time of the report, was unable to provide details of what occurred.

Still under investigation. Police are still trying to confirm this was actually an assault. Both people involved were probably very intoxicated. The injured man, 28, knows the other man well, and police know both of them well, too. Officers have not been able to confirm what happened because they have not been able to interview the injured man. Other “parties” involved have been interviewed. Police aren’t seeking help from the public in locating  the other man. They know who it is and how to reach him.

Reported: Sep 18 2012 5:41PM
Location: 900 BLK LAKEWAY DR
Offense: ACCIDENT – INJURY
Case #: 12B35038

An accident occured at the above location

The injuries weren’t serious. Nobody was taken to the hospital.

Reported: Sep 18 2012 8:02PM
Location: 1900 BLK KING ST
Offense: DEATH INVESTIGATION
Case #: 12B35058

Officers responded to 1901 King Street on a death investigation.

Possible drug overdose in a gas station bathroom. At the time of the report, cause and manner of death were awaiting confirmation from the county medical examiner.

Police release photo of bank robbery suspect

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | August 23, 2012

By Samantha Wohlfeil

Bellingham Police have released a surveillance photo of the man who robbed the Fairhaven branch of Banner Bank on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 21.

The man appears to be the same suspect who robbed the same bank on July 25.

The man walked into the bank, located at 1414 12th St. about 1:23 p.m. Tuesday sporting a long black ponytail and wearing dark sunglasses, a baseball hat, and a scarf around his face.

Unlike the July robbery, in which the male suspect displayed a semi-automatic pistol, the robber on Tuesday did not show any weapon when he demanded money from the teller.

The man left on a black and white bicycle, which was later found next to Lower Padden Creek west of the Bellingham Tennis Club.

A federal helicopter assisted police in the search for the man but they were unable to find him.

Both robberies occurred around 1:30 p.m. and both times the man got away on a bicycle.

When asked if he thought the robber might have tried to catch the 1:50 p.m. Greyhound bus that leaves for Seattle each day from the Bellingham Amtrak station, located just blocks from where the suspect’s bicycle was found on Tuesday, Bellingham Lt. Rick Sucee said police are not sure how the suspect got away.

The suspect was described as a thin white male in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall. He had a long black ponytail and was wearing a dark baseball cap, a sky blue jersey-style shirt with dark blue sleeves, dark pants, and dark shoes with white soles. The suspect may have a goatee and mustache.

A man by the same description robbed the same bank July 25. Police searched from downtown Bellingham to Teddy Bear Cove with the help of a federal border helicopter, but they were unable to locate the suspect. In that case the suspect left the bank on a red mountain bike.

Anyone with information about either robbery is asked to call the Bellingham Police Department at 360-778-8800.

Below, the surveillance image of the man in Tuesday’s robbery.

Here’s the picture of the suspect from the July 25 robbery.

Both photos were courtesy to The Bellingham Herald from the Bellingham Police Department.

Reward offered in search for ‘Tour de Banks Robber’

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | August 3, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of a man who robbed a handful of banks in the greater Seattle area. In each case, he fled on a bicycle.

They call him the “Tour de Banks Robber.” (Here’s the FBI’s wanted poster. Crime Stoppers released their own poster, too, with some clearer photos.)

Sound familiar?

The suspect description, and the getaway vehicle, matches up pretty close to a robbery last week at Banner Bank in Fairhaven. For comparison, here’s a security camera still and sketch released by Bellingham police.

But the Banner Bank robbery wasn’t the first time a lone suspect has fled the scene of a heist on a bike.

Nonetheless, no word yet from the FBI or Bellingham police about whether the “Tour de Banks Robber” may have struck in our fair city — spokespeople from both agencies didn’t answer the phone when called this morning.
