Big backups on I-5, but injuries minor in pickup rollover near Nulle Road

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | September 28, 2012

For update, see bottom of this post.

Two pickups A pickup and a car collided on southbound Interstate 5 near Nulle Road on Friday afternoon, sending two people to St. Joseph hospital and causing backups reported as more than four miles long.

The driver of a pickup changed lanes about 3:40 p.m. without seeing the other pickup car, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary. They collided, and the second truck Toyota Camry was sent off the roadway and into the median.

We tweeted it as news came over the police scanner:

Two people in the struck truck Camry were taken to the hospital. Their injuries were “minor,” Leary said. Nobody in the other truck was hurt.

Both lanes were open an hour later.

Don’t think we’ll get details about the ages, genders and names of the people involved before the weekend. But if we do, I’ll try to update this post.

Update at 7 p.m. The injured pair was identified by state patrol as Dennis Schlecker, 65, and Barb Schlecker, 62, of Surrey, B.C. The driver of the Nissan Titan that switched lanes, Britta K. Lang, 48, of Anacortes, will be cited for a traffic infraction. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt. Troopers don’t think drugs or alcohol were involved.

Car bomb threat at Samish Park turns out to be false alarm

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | September 18, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

A man suffering from apparent mental health problems was arrested Sunday, Sept. 16, on suspicion of firing a handgun after hours at Samish Park.

Deputies responded to the park at 9 p.m. when they got a report of a gunshot. They arrived to find a blue Hyundai “crammed with stuff” in the upper parking lot, said Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks.

The gate of the park was closed, so deputies aren’t sure how the 33-year-old Everett man in the car managed to get in, or managed to avoid being detected when the park shut down.

He rambled about Satan and claimed he was God, then said he had a bomb in the car, Parks said. After the rant, deputies didn’t find him very credible, but they weren’t taking any chances and searched the car. Instead of a bomb, they found three meth pipes, some knives and some loaded handguns.

The suspect was booked into Whatcom County Jail on a series of misdemeanor charges: aiming or discharging a firearm, having a loaded pistol in a vehicle, use of drug paraphernalia and second-degree criminal trespassing. Parks expects he’ll be evaluated by a mental health professional.

Possible fire at Lake Samish house turns out to be smoky pizza cooker

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | July 6, 2012

Via police scanner traffic:

A 911 caller on the west side of Lake Samish reported seeing smoke rising from a window at a home on the opposite shore early Friday, July 6.

About a half dozen fire trucks responded at 8 a.m. to a brown house with white trim at 563 Cedar Acres Street.

Firefighters arriving at the scene confirmed there was smoke — rising from a pizza cooker on a deck — but no fire.
