A Lummi Nation elementary school student’s health continues to improve after he was struck by a school bus last week.
Jay J. Tom, 7, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a Lummi school bus rolled over him Thursday, Jan. 10, as he was getting dropped off in the 4200 block of Lummi Shore Drive, according to the Washington State Patrol.
For more background, here’s the story that ran in the paper Saturday.
At first J.J.’s condition was listed as “critical.” Troopers said he appeared to suffer a broken pelvis. J.J. had improved to “serious” within 24 hours. And by Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said he was in “satisfactory” condition.

A Lummi man was arrested this week on suspicion of raping another tribe member.
Here’s a brief overview from Lummi Communications:

Thomas Bates, of the U.S. Attorney General’s Office in Seattle, declined to say if the case would meet the threshold to move into federal jurisdiction, rather than tribal jurisdiction. (See the Major Crimes Act of 1885.)

LUMMI RESERVATION — A woman was arrested on suspicion of first-degree domestic violence assault and battery Wednesday morning, Aug. 29, but Lummi police have not released any details in the case.
Kathleen Alayne Taylor, 47, was booked into Whatcom County Jail at 8 a.m. by the Lummi Nation Police Department.
As of this afternoon, police have not commented on the assault.
Taylor had been cited and released for shoplifting a bottle of Coca-Cola at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday in the 3200 block of Northwest Avenue in Bellingham. It didn’t appear she had any active warrants at the time she was cited, according to Bellingham police. So it’s likely the assault happened since then.
Assault in the first degree often means the attacker used a deadly weapon.
Taylor’s criminal history includes theft in the first degree, robbery in the second degree and harassment.

Via police scanner traffic:
1:50 p.m. A cow escaped a cattle truck. Possibly in the Ten Mile Road area? It’s “unknown if the driver knows the cow has escaped.”
2:20 p.m. ATV rollover crash in the 2900 block of Raven Crest. The 27-year-old woman driving the ATV was conscious, but not totally alert.
5 p.m. Two fire calls: one in Sandy Point, one on the Lummi Reservation. Both turned out to be smoke by the time firefighters arrived. The Lummi fire, in the 2300 block of Lummi View Drive, was a deck fire. Neighbors phoned it in, but it seemed like they gave the wrong address. The flames were out by the time engines found the house.
6:50 p.m. Ford F-150 crashed and went off the roadway, 2.4 miles deep on Twin Lakes Road. A man came across the truck. He spoke with the 54-year-old driver, who has a history of stroke. The victim hit his head and also had stomach pain. It’s taking a lot of coordinating for firefighters to respond — that’s a bumpy gravel forest service road.
