An hour of Monday morning scanner chatter

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | September 24, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

Via police scanner traffic:

9 a.m. A 10-year-old was hit in the head with a rock — don’t know how — and was losing “a serious amount of blood.” Radio traffic was muffled, but I believe it was on Mount Baker Highway south of Kendall.

9:20 a.m. An outside fire reported near the top of Sumas Mountain, by the radio tower.

9:30 a.m. A pair of construction workers were fighting near (what sounded like) the end of a driveway in (what sounded like) Bellingham. “There’s also ladders being thrown,” dispatchers said.

9:40 a.m. A bicyclist was struck by a beige Toyota Camry at the intersection of Cordata Parkway and West Kellogg Road. The cyclist was knocked down, but by the time an ambulance arrived he was conscious, oriented and sitting on the curb.

Edit: And here are a couple more.

11 a.m. Possible drug deal in front of a Catholic church on the Lummi Reservation. Witness saw an exchange, then both men walked to a grove of apple trees and crouched down.

11:50 a.m. Dispatchers figuring out how to deal with domestic dispute: ”Perhaps you can phone Tony and get to the bottom of these shenanigans.”

Via police scanner traffic:

9:03 a.m. A caller reported a woman was burning court paperwork that had just been delivered to her at an RV park on Beachcomber Drive in Birch Bay. Dispatchers said the court order hadn’t been delivered yet, according to their files, but the caller said the owner of the RV park had just served the paperwork.

9:35 a.m. A woman, in her 40s, had an allergic reaction in the Ferndale High School cafeteria. An ambulance responded.

11:20 a.m. A man ran from law enforcement. He may have told a witness he had warrants. (Location has been scratchy, but it’s probably near East Sunset Drive.) Helicopter helping in search.

At 11:51 a.m., dispatchers radioed to the pilot, “They got him detained.”

Fire initially reported as arson allegedly set by transients living in vacant house

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | August 23, 2012

By Samantha Wohlfeil

BELLINGHAM – What initially sounded like an arson at a vacant house on Primrose Lane turned out to be a small fire set and extinguished by two transient people apparently living in the house, according to Bellingham Police.

Reports of visible flames and smoke first came across the police scanner at about 9:47 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Firefighters responded, but when they tried to enter the house, a transient man tried to block the door, Bellingham Police Sgt. Shawn Aiumu said.

Officers arrived and arrested the man for obstructing law enforcement, Aiumu said.

The small fire was out by the time firefighters entered the house.

Apparently the man and a transient woman were living in the abandoned house. They had brought in a few shopping carts filled with their things, Aiumu said.

The man claimed the woman started the fire, and he put it out, but the woman claimed the man started the fire and she put it out, Aiumu said.

No serious damage was reported.

Via police scanner:

9:17 a.m. Smoldering fire in the bark in the flowerbeds outside of Joann Fabrics on Sunset Drive.

10:21 a.m. A white male in jeans, a white shirt, and a baseball cap ran screaming at another driver over a parking space. He was driving a dirty white Dodge Dakota. Apparently both drivers ran into the court house.

10:27 a.m. An activated fire alarm at Border Patrol headquarters located at 2410 Nature’s Pathway in Blaine. They were testing the alarms.

10:44 a.m. Medic responding to someone having difficulty breathing.

11:35 a.m. Someone reported a man and a woman were near a green shack and things “didn’t look right.” Didn’t hear a location.

11:45 a.m. A crash between a car and a motorcycle on Mt. Baker Highway east of the turn off for Valley Highway. By 11:59 a.m. motorcycle was upright and the patient was walking around. Crews were investigating the crash.

11:55 a.m. Fire alarm going off in the Daylight building at 1205 State St. (Coincidentally, across the street from the Herald Building. Heard the alarm for a few minutes before it came across the scanner). Staff working in the building accidentally set off the alarm and called to report it was not an emergency.

11:57 a.m. A male driver in the parking lot of Red Robin at 100 Telegraph Road yelled at a woman and honked his horn, scaring a disabled family member she was helping into her car. The man then parked within two inches of her car.

12:11 p.m. A man was reported walking around outside a house on Kendall Road with a shotgun. The woman reporting the incident was inside with her baby, her sister, and a grandparent.

12:15 p.m. An outdoor unattended burn was reported at East Bartlett Road.

1:12 p.m. Reports of a 59-year-old woman with neck pain, possibly cardiac related. She was at the Kendall fire hall.

1:28 p.m. Bank robbery at Banner Bank in Fairhaven. 1414 12th St.*

*Note: Reports of the robbery and search continued throughout the afternoon. Read the story here.

1:39 p.m. Report of an 8-year-old boy with a chin laceration. “A bottle was thrown out of a vehicle, patient also has cut legs.”

3:32 p.m. A man reported seeing a female in a ditch near Boulevard Park. She was apparently wearing nice clothing. Police on bikes in the area went to look for her.

4:13 p.m. Medics sent to Denny’s on Telegraph Road to help with someone having a seizure.

4:59 p.m. A two vehicle collision on James Street. They pulled in to the Trader Joe’s parking lot.

5:13 p.m. “A theft just occurred at I Wana Moka on Holly Street.” Apparently two men and a woman went in and stole the tips from the tip jar on the counter.

Saturday afternoon scanner chatter

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | August 11, 2012

Via police scanner traffic:

1:50 p.m. A cow escaped a cattle truck. Possibly in the Ten Mile Road area? It’s “unknown if the driver knows the cow has escaped.”

2:20 p.m. ATV rollover crash in the 2900 block of Raven Crest. The 27-year-old woman driving the ATV was conscious, but not totally alert.

5 p.m. Two fire calls: one in Sandy Point, one on the Lummi Reservation. Both turned out to be smoke by the time firefighters arrived. The Lummi fire, in the 2300 block of Lummi View Drive, was a deck fire. Neighbors phoned it in, but it seemed like they gave the wrong address. The flames were out by the time engines found the house.

6:50 p.m. Ford F-150 crashed and went off the roadway, 2.4 miles deep on Twin Lakes Road. A man came across the truck. He spoke with the 54-year-old driver, who has a history of stroke. The victim hit his head and also had stomach pain. It’s taking a lot of coordinating for firefighters to respond — that’s a bumpy gravel forest service road.

Thursday morning scanner chatter

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | August 9, 2012

Via police scanner traffic:

7:15 a.m. Unresponsive 19 year old at an address on Mission Road, “near the railroad tracks and Chestnut.” My best guess is that’s in Everson, but I didn’t catch any followup.

7:50 a.m. An officer was about to give a man a courtesy ride out to Grandview Road. When he radioed in the man’s name, the dispatcher told him they might have to change the route: They had probable cause to arrest him for intimidating a witness. (Jacob Steven Humphrey, 21, was booked into Whatcom County Jail about an hour and a half later. In an active Superior Court case, he’s charged with possession of meth.)

8:05 a.m. Officers doing a welfare check in the 3200 block of Lightning Bird Lane. A man and his girlfriend had been fighting all night. A 911 caller wanted to know they were OK.

8:15 a.m. “Transporting one –” a rooster is heard crowing in the background “– juvenile female.”

8:40 a.m. “Suspicious person call in Sudden Valley. Unknown person on (the caller’s) roof.” Five minutes later: “Suspicious person sounded like a legitimate contractor.”

Got pretty quiet for about an hour.

9:45 a.m. Patient on Bells Grove, in Point Roberts, was passing out and turning colors. An ambulance was sent to the scene.

10:25 a.m. Aid responding to call reporting 87-year-old woman with serious (but non-traumatic) shoulder pain.

11:45 a.m. Unconscious 30-year-old man bleeding from the mouth in the 300 block of Lottie Street, at the bus stop. “Possible domestic assault. Unknown if the scene is secure.”

Also, for anybody listening to a scanner about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday: The 100- to 200-foot fishing vessel in distress near Portage Island turned out to be a “misunderstanding,” a U.S. Coast captain confirmed this morning. Crews were dispatched, but it turned out the ship wasn’t in distress after all.

Via police scanner traffic:

9:50 a.m. Delivery truck crash on Interstate 5 in Bellingham. From our Twitter feed:

10:10 a.m. Elderly man at Eagle Ridge Assisted Living, 5370 Barrett Road, assaulted his wife and choked another patient. He was running around “naked and covered in feces.” Law enforcement was en route last I heard.

11 a.m. Truck vs. cyclist crash at F and West Holly streets. The bicyclist, 17, had some “banged-up knees,” but otherwise seemed fine. The crash was blocking part of the road.
