One weird thing from Monday morning’s scanner chatter

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | October 1, 2012

Via police scanner traffic:

A man, “college-aged but not in college,” was “talking to himself and others about drugs and getting high” at 8:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, on Western Washington University’s campus.

He was wearing a “dirty red sweatshirt, dirty shorts” and a distinctive cross necklace. His body emitted “a strong smell of B.O.,” dispatchers noted. Somebody called police and asked to have him escorted off the premises.

Sounded like he didn’t need an escort. He was gone when police showed up.

Woman, 94, injured in crash at Samish Way stoplight

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | August 16, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

A 94-year-old woman suffered a “sore forehead” in a crash near the Samish Way on-ramp Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 15.

Harriet Dixon was driving a 2000 Buick Century northbound on Samish Way about 3:25 p.m., when she started a left turn onto Lincoln Street at the stoplight. She didn’t yield to an oncoming 2002 Volkswagen Passat, and the two cars crashed “pretty much head on,” said Bellingham Police Sgt. Shawn Aiumu.

The Passat driver, 19, and a 20-year-old passenger were unhurt.

Dixon, who suffered a head injury, was ticketed. Nobody else was in her car. The police report didn’t note if she was taken to the hospital as a precaution; regardless, her injuries weren’t life-threatening. Bellingham Fire Department spokespeople haven’t responded to a message I left about an hour before this post.

(And on kind of a lighter note, callers originally reported the woman appeared to be about 80 years old. Turned out she was born in June 1918. “Must look good for a 94-year-old,” Aiumu said.)

Update at 4 p.m. Got a call back from the Bellingham Fire Department. Dixon wasn’t taken to the hospital.

A couple of notes on National Night Out

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | August 11, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

Here’s a colorful recap of this year’s National Night Out event, written by David Doll of Whatcom Unified Emergency Management.

The post also covers home emergency kits, how to make a family emergency plan that goes “beyond screaming” and general neighborhood preparedness.

Also, I spoke with Bellingham police spokesman Mark Young earlier this week about the event. He had a couple of things he’s going to pass on to whoever organizes the event next year. (And he hopes to be a big part of the planning again.)

  • It’d be good to have a business sponsor, so people can get some “schwag.” T-shirts, hats — that kind of thing.
  • More coordination with neighborhood associations. Some of the smaller events could come together to make a larger event.
  • Assign someone to hop from place to place, taking photos. Pictures would get posted to the city’s website.

Via scanner traffic:

At 12:12 p.m. the driver of a Ford Excursion was ramming a neighbor’s fence in the 2200 block of D Street in Bellingham.

Sounded like this was linked to an ongoing dispute.

“We were there for something similar yesterday,” dispatchers said.

‘Tiny thieves’ loot store’s ice cream freezer, and other blurbs from Blaine police logs

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | May 16, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

From the always entertaining Blaine police blotter:

Thursday, May 10. At 10:45 p.m., a Blaine resident called police late at night while searching for a fleet-footed Chihuahua that leapt from a parked car at his home and disappeared. The canine, named Kuna, was last seen running on A Street, adjacent to the international border.

Friday, May 11. At 2:02 p.m., police were dispatched when a trio of tiny thieves raided store’s ice cream chest and high tailed it outside to Bell Road with their high-calorie loot.

They lived nearby, and were tracked down by a store employee with the help of their guardian. The eldest of the three was not yet 6 years old, so the business accepted payment for the goods and the crime was resolved with a lecture.

At 3:47 p.m., passersby called police when they saw two very large men trying to force a teenage boy into a vehicle near Boblett Street and Borderite Way. Officers arrived at the melee to discover that the men were employees of a transport company. They had been assigned to take the boy out-of-state to a youth facility at the request of his parents.

Unfortunately no one told the teenager about this plan, so he did his best to fight off the brawny pair before they handcuffed him and put him in their car. When police arrived the boy was freed, then taken to hospital by medics for evaluation of injuries he received during his capture. Officers are interviewing witnesses and compiling a report for prosecutor review of possible charges against the two men. (This case number was filed by Blaine police as a second-degree assault.)

Saturday, May 12. At 3:32 p.m., officers received a report of an erratically driven vehicle on Odell Road. An investigation yielded mutual complaints about hurled epithets and flung fingers. The matter was resolved with a discussion.

Sunday, May 13. At 8:46 p.m., police were dispatched to a resident’s call that a neighbor had entered his house on D Street without permission. The neighbor was interviewed and denied entering the house, but admitted to opening up a sliding door to fix the complainant’s curtain. Statements were obtained and a report was forwarded to the prosecutor for review of the trespassing complaint.

Tuesday, May 15. At 10:50 a.m., a vendor contacted police to report that a propane-driven floor stripper and two five-gallon silver-colored aluminum propane canisters had been stolen while he was working on at a business site on H Street. The loss totals more than $5,000. The case is under investigation.

At 11:55 a.m., a man contacted police to report seeing a suspicious man lurking around his house, on B Street, and knocking on his door. The suspect had left a half hour earlier. An officer located the suspect and found that he was a Blaine resident inquiring if the property was for sale.

A busy Saturday afternoon on the police scanner

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | May 12, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

Via scanner traffic:

Noon: Man having an allergic reaction, with hives on his body, at Lummi Law & Order, 2616 Kwina Road. Having trouble speaking.

12:35 p.m.: Traumatic injury in 2500 block of Lummi View Drive. No more details over the scanner after aid was called.

12:45 p.m.: Registered nurse found 86-year-old father dead in 2700 block of Nome Street.

1 p.m.: A man suffered a dislocated shoulder during a fight with a fellow tenant in the 500 block of North Garden Street. Sounded like he was trying to defend himself with an ax at one point, then had it taken from him. At least one arrested for felony assault. No details yet on what the fight was about.

1:15 p.m.: Bicyclist appeared to be carrying two guns “tucked under his shirt.” Southbound in 4000 block of Meridian Street. Red bicycle. Cops searched the area for at least the next 20 minutes, couldn’t find anyone matching the description.

1:25 p.m.: Firefighters called to investigate large beach fire near the 2300 block of West Shore Drive, on Lummi Island. Eight feet in diameter.

1:30 p.m.: Didn’t catch the location, but neighbor reported “marijuana wafting from the railroad tracks.”

1:40 p.m.: About 10 teenagers on the railroad tracks near Marine Drive, refusing to get off the tracks for BNSF maintenance workers.

1:45 p.m.: Female student reported a naked man in the girl’s bathroom near the gym at Sehome High School, 2700 Bill McDonald Parkway. “We have the student on the line. Suspect in his 40s, wearing no clothes. He was masturbating at the time.” Described as “dirty blond, overweight.” It’s a Saturday, but there’s a tennis tournament going on at the high school this weekend. When the cops got there they couldn’t find him anywhere around the gym. Sounds like nobody saw him leaving. Police were checking  Bill McDonald and Samish Way at 2 p.m.

Aggressive ‘posturing’ in downtown Bellingham leads to 2 arrests for disorderly conduct

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | May 12, 2012

By Caleb Hutton

A boy and a man, both teens, were arrested near the downtown Bellingham bus station Friday afternoon, May 11, after both were accused of pulling out knives as they got ready to fight.

Turns out there were two suspects, who were “posturing” to fight, then backed off, said Bellingham Police Sgt. Dennis James. Witnesses saw both pull out knives as they approached each other to fight.

They were arrested a couple minutes later down the street. Both were accused of disorderly conduct. I don’t have names at this point, but the man might show up in the jail bookings soon.

About an hour later, someone called 911 saying 15 to 20 teens were fighting at the corner of Railroad Avenue and East Champion Street.

The crowd had dispersed by the time the cops showed up, James said (and there were cops right there, so that must have been pretty quick). Nobody in the area showed obvious signs of being assaulted.

James said the second fight might have involved friends of the two arrestees, but he wasn’t sure. He noted it didn’t seem like either potential fight was gang-related.

I went down there when it came over the scanner. Saw a lot of cops searching for signs of a recent fight, but nothing else out of the ordinary.
