What clearing 60 feet of snow from a highway in the Cascades looks like

Here are some awe-inspiring photos of crews plowing as much as 60 feet of snow from the North Cascades Highway (SR 20) in April. They’re borrowed from the state Department of Transportation’s Flickr page.

The highway reopened at noon Thursday, May 10.

Clearing the snow took about seven weeks. I couldn’t choose just one photo (or just two or just five), and there are others on the Flickr page worth checking out, along with captions explaining each shot. For the story behind the flamingo, check out Zoe Fraley’s story from last week.

Photos courtesy of the DOT. Spokesman Dustin Terpening said several crew members contributed to the photo stream.
