Two Whatcom County men have been charged with stealing 11 guns from a safe at a Custer home out of spite.
Richard “David” Bonkoski, 21, and Darcy James Glenman, 19, stand accused of stealing the following guns from a house on Custer School Road:
- A Craig .303-caliber carbine;
- A Winchester bolt action rifle;
- A .45-caliber muzzleloader;
- A .40-caliber muzzleloader;
- A Mossberg shotgun;
- A Remington shotgun;
- A Rossi shotgun;
- A Wichester .30-06;
- A Ruger 10-.22;
- A British carbine;
- And a .22-caliber single-shot rifle.
The gun owner suspected his son, Bonkoski, had swiped a key to the house just before the Dec. 28 heist. Deputies spoke with Glenman, one of Bonkoski’s friends, who denied everything. But they found the carbine in his house after a brief search, according to charging documents.
When deputies confronted Bonkoski, he had a key to his father’s home on him. (It’s worth noting, however, his last listed address was his father’s home on Custer School Road.)
Deeper investigation led deputies to a crawl space at an acquaintance’s house in Blaine, where they found a stash of nine more guns and some ammo. That’s when Glenman allegedly fessed up, saying he and Bonkoski planned the burglary because his friend was “upset with his father,” according to the charges.
Glenman and Bonkoski were each charged last week with one count of first-degree burglary and 11 counts of theft of a firearm. Bonkoski was accused of 11 counts of unlawful possession of a firearm in the first degree; Glenman was accused of 11 counts of the same crime, but in the second degree. (The disparity has to do with their past convictions.)
I’ve written about Glenman on this blog before. Here’s the link. In July, he was convicted of felony assault for swinging a hunting knife at a boy before poking him in the chest with the blade. He was ordered to serve a year in jail, but 296 days of the sentence was suspended.
Bonkoski, on the other hand, has felonies on his record for burglary, taking a car without permission and drug crimes.
Edited at 5:30 p.m. Glenman’s last known address — as listed in court records filed last week — has been edited out until it can be confirmed.

Jeeze…you can’t make this stuff up so it must be true.
Awesome work in this investigation by these Deputies.
This is some of the worst reporting I’ve seen so far. The victim is now victimized by identifying his home address and giving a map with directions to his home!? Where will the intrusion stop?
Darcy has not lived with me on vista dr. for at least two yrs!,so as for there being a search of my house and a gun found here!,that is a flat out lie!either the cops or the person writeing this needs to get there facts straight….,i dont condone what my son did!,but also don’t want to have my home known for this kind of stuff!…NOT COOL!..
this goes to show the horrible drug problems we have in Bellingham. My son Bonkoski is an drug addict with untreated mental Health issues.His dad and I tried to get him help, but because he was 21 we could not force him into any rehabilitation center for his mental heath condition. He has been to treatment numerous times, so he knows how to stop but his depression and anxiety gets in the way. Since he choose not to take his meds he was always sick unless he was on his drugs. NO!!! I’m not making excuses for my son but he wasn’t in a good state of mind when he did this. His answer for why he did it doesn’t matter since he was high on everything under the kitchen sink (METH). I feel since our son was making bad decisions that was harming himself then we should of been able to have him committed sooner then all this shit happened. There are numerous of ER visits of him over dosing and having horrible sicknesses from using drugs. If a person threatens to kill themselves they will commit them right away, I feel like my son was committing suicide, but slowly from all the drugs he did. My son should have a consequence for what he did,and the Police dept. and Sheriff Dept. did a excellent job for getting the guns back and keeping our community safe. I think the Bellingham Herald should of thought twice before putting the where a bouts of his Dads house for his Dads safety.
Not really sure either what the address and map of the victims home accomplishes.
Sad story.
Glad all the guns were rounded up though.
Way too many guns in peoples homes if you ask me, which no one did.
Darrell and his brother/son Darrell.
This is the reason why I support abortions and birth control, too.
Where someone lives–if they own—is public record. A few clicks is all it takes here in Washington. Most other states don’t have it or charge for it.
I think this is the perfect example of someone who has fallen through the cracks so to speak. They have mental health problems, and are refusing to take their meds. They are also using drugs. The parents have tried to get them some help, but they refuse. This person has committed numerous crimes. What more do they have to do before someone gets seriously hurt??? Obviously, he needs to be incarcerated.
I know you can look the father’s location up on the computer and that’s fine if you want to do so. But I don’t think that the newspaper, in all good conscience, should print it out and put a map to the location.
I Just Find This Sickining. Another Low Life Screwing Up The Name!!! Those Of Us With The Last Name Bonkoski, That Are Good Hard Working People Get Treated Like Crap Because Of This Punk And His Cracka Grandma.
@Barb you do not know our son, you were not there for any of us when he was young so please do not run him down.He is sick and needs help, if you knew the true person he can be you would not say that about him.
Worst Ever, he’s not a convicted felon, he’s allowed to own those guns. There is no law that says how many guns we can have. Would you like it if somebody came over and told you that you had too many cats or dogs? I think you wouldn’t like that either. If you hates guns so much, you got plenty of countries to move to that would suit your anti-gun beliefs.
Barb,
Why do you capitalize every word?
Cracka Grama!
To the person who sounded so caring by suggesting Bonkers was let down by his comminity and then says, “Obviously, he should be incarerated”: You crack me up!
I feel for the parents of these boys, (except Darcy’s MOM). They have done what they can for these kids. Think back and if when you were younger and in your rebelion time someone told you NOT to do something.. you probably thought of doing it. Well some kids just DON’T learn from their prior errors. I believe both these boys will continue to have contact with the Police throughout their lives. Please just DON’T blame the parents. I’m GLAD they got caught and hate to think of the mass destruction they could have done with those guns! Thank you to the police for a job well done. I do however feel sorry for Darcy’s dad who had his address published and the kid had not lived their for 2 years. Please do your reporting Herald before Publishing.
Thanks!
I have known Bonkoski from the day he was born. I have thought of him as my own, caring for him since a boy and again in his teen years. I am so sorry how his life turned out, but I do no how caring and loving he is. He has had a troubled life, and does need help. I hope he has another chance in this life time to show his true talented self and not just locked up with no help or any future.
