Giving thanks: part I

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | November 19, 2012

This Thanksgiving week, all of us in Whatcom County who value fresh, healthy, natural food have a lot to be thankful for! This will be my first post on the subject.

Today, I’m thankful for farmers. Only about 1% of Americans claim farming as their occupation these days, according to Census Bureau data, but nearly 100% of us rely on them to survive. (The exception, I suppose, is the subsistence gardener or forager—of these, I can imagine there are few.)

Whatcom County is in the top 3% of agricultural counties in the U.S. when it comes to production numbers, according to Whatcom Farm Friends, and is Western Washington’s best agricultural producer. Citydata.com reports that 83% of Whatcom County’s farms are owned by an individual farmer or family, which leads me to close with this: family farmers, we salute you! Thank you for the bounty that we will enjoy on Thursday and every day.
