Opal, Braeburn, Granny Smith

It’s apple month over at Whatcom Farm to School, and we live in a wonderful place to celebrate this sweet, crisp, storable fruit. Washington state is our nation’s leading apple producer, producing 6 times as many as the runner up (New York) and roughly half of the nation’s apple supply (2009 census data). You can tell by a walk through a grocer’s produce aisle that we take our apples seriously: not only will you find the fruit front and center in most fruit displays, it will also probably be available in a dozen or more varieties ranging from yellow to green to pink to red and from tart to sweet and everything in between. Organic, local, or heirloom varieties are easy to come by in Whatcom County, too.

Local schools will serve up apples as the featured menu item later this month on Harvest of the Month Day, and in the days leading up to the feast they’re offering recipes, activities, and educational materials about apples on their website here.

Enjoy an apple a day!
