Two talented author/illustrators came out with gorgeous new color concept books in 2012.
Green written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger (ages 2-7)
This book works on so many levels. The youngest children will appreciate the rich color and simple text (two words per page). Older children will enjoy exploring the concept of varying shades of green, the hidden pictures, and the natural guessing game that is elicited by the artful die cuts that show just a sliver of what’s to come on the next page. The oldest children (and adults) will appreciate all of the above and will get a brilliant lesson in art, color, and design. This 2013 Caldecott Honor book is truly a feast for the senses.
Baby Bear Sees Blue written and illustrated by Ashley Wolff (ages 2-4)
A quiet, cozy story about a cub and Mama Bear out for a stroll. Baby asks questions like, “Who is warming me?.. Who is singing to me?.. What smells so good?” Mama answers the questions patiently and pleasantly, “That is the sun…Those are the jays….Those are the strawberries.” As the reader turns the page, “Baby bear sees yellow….Baby bear sees blue…Baby bear sees red.” This is a beautiful book that is a joy to share with a curious, young cub.
Add some color to your gray, February days with these delightful titles!
