Autism has increased exponentially in recent years and now affects 1 in 88 children (1 in 54 boys). This increase may be partially due to the broadening of the diagnosis to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in 1990s (including more subtle disorders like Asperger’s syndrome.) Other reasons for the increase may be better diagnosis and possible environmental pollutants (my personal pet theory). There is no scientific evidence that supports the popular belief that immunizations are a cause (caused by one discredited study by a disreputable physician.)
Here are some of the earliest signs of autism to look for in your infant:
Doesn’t make eye contact
Doesn’t cuddle
Doesn’t smile responsively or laugh
Doesn’t response to name or familiar voices
Doesn’t babble or use sounds to get your attention
Doesn’t reach out to be picked up
Lack of pointing or gestures (like waving “bye-bye”)
Doesn’t look where you look or point
Doesn’t look to you when unsure (social referencing)
Doesn’t imitate expressions, movements or sounds (no back and forth interactions)
Has a “head lag” at 6 months when pulled into a sitting position
Any loss of speech or babbling or social skills at any age
Remember these signs may have other causes and not indicate autism. But if you have any question please have your baby assessed as soon as possible by your child’s doctor or contact Whatcom County Early Childhood Assessment Clinic @ (360) 738-2522 or 384-0574 to assess children two and under free.
