Local Artsy Book Gifts For Kids

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | December 5, 2012

Is it the activity or the results that make art such an incredible experience? As you approach your search for the most impactful gift you can give to your children this year why not look at books about artists. Biographies that describe what the artist was going through when they created memorable works that last throughout history.

An excellent series is currently being written by one of our northwest local children’s authors; Lois Harris. Lois began her series with the American impressionist Mary Cassatt, having found this to be a successful and sought after venture she went on to write about the western painter, Charlie Russell. Lois now has a new book about the magical art of Maxfield Parrish. All of these artists are among my favorites and Lois has written them to inspire children to follow their dreams.

Another local children’s author whose books are worth investigating is MaryAnn Kohl. MaryAnn writes art activity books, she owns Bright Ring Publishing and is among 13 experts selected to serve on the Barnes and Noble Kids’ Expert Circle. One of her books, ‘Great Artists’, tells a little bit about the artist alongside an activity that can be explored for the hands on child who wants to get messy. She has brought art activities and artist histories to children all over the world for over 27 years.

The northwest is one of the most beautiful places to live so naturally artists and authors are attracted to this beauty and enjoy the energy and companionship available here. I have only listed two examples so tell me, who else is out there in our northwest that you know of and enjoy reading?
