Lots of Dots

We recently read the book “Lots of Dots”  by Craig Frazier  and followed it with a wonderfully colorful yet simple art project. “Lots of Dots” is a fun filled book, beautifully illustrated with all of our favorite things that are made of dots (or circles), ice cream, flowers, wheels, bubbles, and so much more. After reading this book we were all very inspired and headed over to the art table to create our own art full of colorful dots.

In the preschool and toddler art classes we only use the primary colors, red, blue and yellow, which we have a song we love to sign when ever those 3 colors come out to play-

To the tune of Farmer in the Dell

Red, yellow, blue
Red, yellow, blue
The primary colors are red, yellow, blue.

Orange, green and purple
Orange, green and purple
The secondary colors are orange, green and purple

Since we also happened to be learning about the letter ‘D’ this week it tied in perfectly to create our dot masterpieces on cutout letter D shapes.

We used sponges and foam circle shapes as our ‘brushes’ and dipped them into some finger paint and dotted away on our paper. Some of the children mixed colors to create new ones and other layered dots on top of dots. The objectives of this lesson and the end results were:

  • the children had fun
  • learned about mixing primary colors to create secondary colors
  • we discussed the circle shape
  • dots are brought to us by the letter ‘D’

Viola! Dot masterpieces!
