Six local photographers will receive public recognition for their work in the recent “Essence of Bellingham” Photo Competition, which drew more than 700 entries from area residents of all ages.
The winning entries and others submitted to the competition are posted on the city of Bellingham Web site. Go to cob.org and enter “Essence of Bellingham” in the search window.
The competition is sponsored by the city of Bellingham and Whatcom Museum. Entries receiving highest honors are:
Best of Show, first place: “Blissfully Unaware” by Sandi Heinrich (professional).
Best of Show, second place: “Chomp!” by Elijah Forslof (k-fourth grade).
Best of Show, third place: “Marine Park at Sunset” by Paul Israel (college).
Best of Class, fifth to eighth grade: “The Big Snow” by Joshua Lingbloom.
Best of Class, high school: “Civic Track Meet” by Pete Sundberg.
Best of Class, amateur: “You and Me Under the Sea” by Sally Lubetich.
Many entries submitted for the competition will be on display at Whatcom Museum June 5-7, at Bellingham City Hall in late June, and during a Downtown Art Walk this summer.
Jacqueline Dargitz of Bellingham graduated from the University of Portland, in Oregon, with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Marc Smith of Bellingham graduated from the University of Portland, in Oregon, with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
Five Ferndale High School seniors recently received a total of $5,000 in college scholarships from Tenaska Washington Partners, L.P., owner of the Tenaska Ferndale Cogeneration Station.
Recipients are Holly Hobart, daughter of Pamela and Howard Hobart; Maura Mayock, daughter of Kathleen and Kevin Mayock; Amy Nelson, daughter of Louise and Brian Nelson; Tressa Talbot, daughter of Cindy and Frank Talbot; and Hannah Wasley, daughter of Jane and Tom Wasley.
Two Bellingham residents received awards at Goodwill’s Appreciation Breakfast, held in Seattle June 2.
Tatayana Karadobrii, an immigrant from Tajikistan received an Outstanding Achievement Award for her dedication in studying to become a licensed practical nurse, and Ron Fuoco received an H. Martin Smith Jr. Scholarship Award to support his pursuit of a career in welding.
