Local Iraq Veterans Against the War chapter creator suspended, reinstated

(A note on this post: I realize that by posting on an issue that has hit a nationally-syndicated columnist’s blog and has stirred people’s passions that people from around the nation might come here for this. That’s fine, but I will warn anyone who posts here now that I will not tolerate anything less than civil discourse on this issue. Name-calling and insults will not remain in the comments section, as I will delete such comments without remorse. Please see the rules to the right if you need more clarification. Debate and discussion is awesome. Let’s be adults)

Evan Knappenberger is seen above during the Wednesday, March 19, event organized by Ferndale High School students to protest the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War, where Knappenberger was a guest speaker.

Evan Knappenberger, a local Iraq War veteran who did the Stop Loss Tower Guard vigil last summer and started the local Iraq Veterans Against the War chapter was suspended from the group, but reinstated after four days, for making threats online against pro-war activists two weeks ago.

Knappenberger, who initially suffered an indefinite suspension, told me on the phone this morning that he had received an apology from the IVAW board for what he called their “arbitrary decision” to suspend him in the heat of the moment.

I’ve e-mailed IVAW and a blogger about the issue (the blogger may or may not be an IVAW official, I’m unclear from the blog).

Anyway, a recounting of events:

The issue occurred during the run-up to Winter Soldier II, the IVAW’s revisiting of the Vietnam Veteran’s Against the War’s 1971 media event, Winter Soldier, where they recounted atrocities they had committed and witnessed. The IVAW would share their stories about Afghanistan and Iraq, according to the group’s Web site.

Leading up to the event, words started flying back and forth, Knappenberger said, between IVAW members and the Gathering of Eagles, a pro-war group whose mission is to guard war memorials, but also counter-protest IVAW and other groups. Knappenberger said that there has been violence between the two groups before, and that the executive director of GOE had assault charges filed against him for attacking an IVAW member.

That’s where things took a turn for the worse. Knappenberger and another IVAW member, Jonathan De Wald, began making comments online against Gathering of Eagles who were arguing with them. Knappenberger made his comments on his personal blog, http://wobblynomad.blogspot.com/, which he has since made private and is accessible by invite only. *Update* - Since I posted this, Knappenberger has completely deleted the blog. However, conservative blogger and commentator Michelle Malkin (who comes into this story in a bit) grabbed screen captures of Knappenberger’s blog before he made it private, so we can see his words.

First, a warning, what I’ll be linking to has adult language so visit at your own discretion. I can’t even quote some of it here because it’s fairly profane.

On March 10, Knappenberger posted the following:

Gathering of Smeagols:

You are going to eat it unless you cease and desist from your planned “events".

Not a threat. Just a warning.

That’s where Malkin and others come in. Knappenberger said today on the phone that his blog isn’t even searchable, but that he believes GOE members had a Google news alert set up for when people discussed their group. So they saw his comments, and then those comments got to Michelle Malkin, who took the torch and ran with it (making several posts and follow-ups on the incident throughout several days).

After Malkin posted, Knappenberger posted again (you can see that in the above link), where he then said that GOE “all need to either go eat an IED in Iraq, or go drink some dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (agent orange, [expletive delete])".

He proceeds to talk about more violence against Malkin and conservative commentator Ann Coulter, discussing them being “hog-tied with electrical wire in an Iraqi ditch” with a death squad around them.

In a subsequent post he calls for a “fatwah” against Malkin to assassinate her.

*Note - some people may not go to the links I’ve posted, and I realize that, so I should note that later on in the post that Knappenberger states that he doesn’t actually intend to do harm, but he does “not apologize” for his views.*

Another conservative blogger states that someone had filed a complaint with the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive Bureau (commonly known as the ATF) after the comments, though it’s unclear whether the complaint was against De Wald or Knappenberger.

After this, another blog from the IVAW side chimed in. “Army Sergeant,” an IVAW member who runs the Active Duty Patriot blog on Blogspot.com, posted an “official statement” from the organization where he she said that De Wald had been removed from IVAW and Knappenberger had been suspended indefinitely.

Later in the post on Army Sergeant says:

While this blog is not primarily an official blog, and often veers into the personal, I would like to put my official hat on and make the following statement on behalf of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

… Iraq Veterans Against the War does not condone threats of violence or violence against idealogical opponents, for Winter Soldier or for any other event.

Iraq Veterans Against the War and I personally have invited a number of military and veteran bloggers to attend Winter Soldier, because it is an event for military and veterans. Some of those bloggers support the war in Iraq. Some do not. All of these bloggers will be safe and welcomed at Winter Soldier as fellow servicemembers and veterans. They will be blogging from an enclosed space with controlled access, and security personnel will be there for their safety and to help alleviate any concerns. I will also give my personal word of honor as a non-commissioned officer as a guarantor for the safety of any bloggers under my charge.

*Update* - I just spoke with Army Sergeant on the phone, who told me she will be forwarding my e-mail on to IVAW officials who will explain more of their perspective. She said that there are some specifics that are not accurate from Knappenberger, though she didn’t elaborate because she said she is not responsible for disciplinary actions of IVAW members.

“I’ve been getting death threats for quite awhile now,” Knappenberger told me today. “I just kind of boiled over. Yeah, I slipped up.”

Knappenberger, who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, said that the issue has been dead for two weeks and it’s not a big deal.

He asked how I had heard about the information, and I explained to him it was another blog commenter here, the conservative-minded AFY, who often e-mails me tips or articles to post here (if you all only knew how much I DON’T post from him. Seriously, he’s an addict).

So that’s where it stands now. Knappenberger is still a member of IVAW. I’m still waiting to hear back from IVAW on the issue. He said the IVAW is also “redefining” its terms of non-violence after the incident, with the recognition that they have soldiers in the group.

Because Knappenberger was not allowed at the Winter Soldier event, he offered up his testimony to them and he is also offering it up here. *Update* - Knappenberger has asked me to take the testimony down.

I suppose you think it is awefully cute to see Sam Taylor mention you in his blog, as if you were deepthroat or something. Then to comment on your own story? This blog entry highlights concerns I have had for quite some time regarding the reduced possibilities for civil discourse in our society.

It seems to me that the cable news networks, media pundits, spin masters, and political sound-biters have all too effectively pandered to American predilections for gossipy, tabloid sensationalism. Even NBC's Meet the Press and other Sunday news talk shows all too easily devolve into media spectacles amounting to little more than ideological food fights, with a seemingly endless series of talking heads spewing ever more versions of some "he said, she said" story.

And, as frequently happens, when discourse gets framed in terms of a combination of ideological divides, bipartisan politics, and religious differences, it's little wonder that national debates and discussion about the important issues of the day are conducted, not in terms of a rational consideration of factual evidence, but instead in terms of emotionally charged sentiments. If nationalism or patriotism is added to this volatile mix, then the issues are even more emotionally explosive.

National debate today more often resembles a battle between the Hatfields and the McCoys, in which hyper-agitated zealots hurl emotionally charged sound-bites across ideological divides.

I'm reasonably sure that the daily shouting matches on cable television are intended to deliver viewers to corporate advertisers. However, in the rush to capture ratings, the distinction between news, entertainment, and propoganda is completely obliterated and the nation becomes more divided than ever.

Unfortunately, in the process, the possibilities for civil discourse in every day life are dramatically diminished, much to the detriment of our democracy.

Of course, another danger in all of this arises when reporters focus more on the tit-for-tat, slurs, threats, and surficial goings on, than on the underlying issues that are, in reality, far more important and pressing.

Sam, you have to be vigilant not to get sucked into the fray.

In the 18 months I've been writing this blog I've tried various ways to convince people I have no political bias. But maybe I'm just not thinking big enough:

Sam Taylor.jpg

That's Bellingham Herald reporter Sam Taylor. He posted the photo on his blog with this caption:

Maybe this makes me right wing

I've been accused of being a liberal and a right-winger during the course of my journalism career, and on this very blog (and in e-mail). It appears that the reason why people come to such conclusions is because I'm just not reporting their perspective, I'm trying to cover all sides. Some people just can't seem to accept that there are other viewpoints than theirs. Sure, yours might be correct, but does that mean that nobody else should be covered?

Taylor's gun post attracted attention of media watchers across the country. Editor & Publisher, has a story up about it this morning.

Taylor told E&P today that he posted the photo and the comment about it making him appear as a right-winger in an effort to show that it is wrong to label him or anyone a liberal or conservative based on appearance. "People will look at it and try to peg me in some hole," he told E&P. "Looking at someone, you cannot just do that. I thought people were going out of their way to try and peg me."

The right wing has the capacity to take the slightest chink in the opposition and run with it, with much amplification from their noise machine. Meanwhile, the 900 plus documented lies of the Bush administration and their daily scandals continue mostly under the media's radar; and the Iraq War/Occupation remains one of this country's biggest blunders in our history.

I've been a member of Iraq Veterans Against War since 2005 when I was a deserter from the Texas Army National Guard. I've always expressed my support of the right of the Iraqi people to fight the occupation for their self-determination. Only Iraqis themselves will bring democracy to Iraq and if they have to take up arms, then so be it. So I don't think Iraq Veterans Against War should have a policy of non-violence. Most of the Iraqi blogs I read are not pacifist.

Advocating the assassination of a fellow citizen, and, trying to stop the free speech of others is a "chink"?

Ah, the left.

Sam.....Please allow me to clear up a couple of things.

1st..GOE is not a "Pro-War group" as you defined it . Far from it. We are Pro-Troop and Pro-Mission. We stand against all those in this country that speak out against the mission while our brave men and women are in harms way. You CANNOT say you support the troops but not the mission. If Americans cannot support the mission then they are in effect giving the enemy the will and confidence to keep fighting because they see us as being weak and not having the will to see the mission through to Victory. It's that simple.
History teaches us that this is exactly what was going on in the minds of the North Vietnamese after Tet. Do your own research. You'll see that what i say is the truth
You can start by googling Gen. Giap.

2nd....Our ex. director never had charges filed against him. That's just an outright lie. As a matter of fact, nobody in this organization has ever had charges filed against them at our rallies.
We have confronted many, many groups (Code Pink, ANSWER COALITION, MAS, UFPJ, IVAW, etc.etc.) and we are the ones that drive our own cars home after the night is done. The others are the ones that have problems
with law enforcement, not us.

Last, i would like to say that i could care less if Evan was back in IVAW. They are the ones that have to put up with his BS, not me.

All i want to say about the IVAW is that their membership consists mainly of deserters, cowards, and undesirables.

Too bad the military didn't weed them out during basic training. Drill Sgts. are pretty good at recognizing these traits and for the most part they boot them out before they are in for long, but a few manage to get through and that's basically how you ended up with VVAW(Vietnam Veterans Against the War)wannabe John Kerrys.

Gathering of Eagles, a pro-war group whose mission is to guard war memorials, but also counter-protest IVAW and other groups. Knappenberger said that there has been violence between the two groups before, and that the executive director of GOE had assault charges filed against him for attacking an IVAW member.

Mike, thanks for taking the time to respond.

I didn't define Pro-war, that I recall. But, from your response, I'd still say you're pro-war group. I suppose you could call yourself a "pro-mission" group? Wouldn't that just be semantics?

Also, the post is close to name-calling, but I think it's toeing the line. If you do post again, please consider your words.

Dear Sam,

As a Canadian reader about 50km north of you, believe me when I say that I am deeply saddened to see such inflammatory discourse going on between citizens in your country.

Remember those thousand points of light that George Bush Sr. spoke of? Together they are supposed to form a brilliant beacon of freedom that represents what the United States of America truly represents. Or at least it used to.

I remember my father, who was born in Germany and just a young kid when WW2 ended, telling me the story of what happened when he, his mother, and his 4 younger siblings entered the refugee camp. When the officials came around asking him which of the 4 sectors of the country they wished to go to, his answer was simple: "A-MER-I-CA, We Love AMERICA!!!"

He ended up as a refugee coming to Canada six years later but he never forgot the kindness and incredible generosity that your forefathers gave to his homeland, giving the rest of his family a chance for a future blessed with democracy and prosperity.

Perhaps when freedom unchallenged goes on for too many generations, people take it for granted. No country is perfect but Mr. Knappenberger seems to have lost sight of what a great country America still is.

Michelle Malkin is an honourable person and a superb writer. While people like Knappenberger may not agree with what she says and may dislike her ethnicity, it goes far, far beyond the pale to wish her hurt in any way (let alone murdered!)

Your country seems to be going through an intellectual civil war of sorts. This is terribly unfortunate, not just for all of you, but for the world as well.

After the challenges of the Iraq War, the conviction toward freedom & liberty for all may be muted in the hearts & minds of many Americans but I believe that resolve can be found again. The people of Tibet are crying out for it. So are those in Taiwan and Darfur and the independent countries of Eastern Europe.

No one is saying that Americans have to shed blood in all of these places but a solid resolve, 300 Million strong, that liberty, democracy, & free enterprise are the best way forward for all human beings would be the best gift that Americans could possibly give to the world.

Step #1 in that unity of purpose involves toning down the rhetoric towards anyone who expresses an opinion different from your own.

Sincerely,

Robert Werner
Vancouver, BC

P.S. Yours is an excellent blog and one I plan to permanently bookmark!

I think that, when Mike Blankenship says that GOE is not "Pro-War", he means that his group is not war-mongering, which is absolutely true- they are not. They do not advocate war as a policy or tool for achieving America's goals. They do, however, recognize the absolute need for a military to act in defense of the nation and, in that sense, are "pro-mission".

Whether or not you agree with the reasons for this war, you must admit that we are in it. That admission, as such, along with support for those who fight wars in the service of their country, is not "pro-war", although groups such as IVAW would have us think otherwise.

Winter Soldier II turned out to be a total fraud.
A reporter asked the so-called "veterans" if they would sign sworn affidavits verifying their claims of "atrocities" and "war crimes". Every single one of the "veterans" said NO
I wonder why...

Thanks for the comments, y'all. TJ, valid point.

Hindsight is 20/20 of course and I could have easily written every sentence in that blog posting 30 different ways. I can't please everyone, unfortunately, so I really can't spend my time waffeling over this word or that word. But I do enjoy the discussion about this stuff because it will always help for the future.

To be clear, when I referred to GoE as pro-war I was not using it in a pejorative sense. I was merely trying to give readers a quick description of the goals of the group without launching into a treatise on it, because this post wasn't really about GoE, it was about a local Iraq War veteran who started the local IVAW chapter and was briefly suspended from the group he helped start here.

Thanks again for tuning in.
