The Politics Blog hits national media

Perhaps not the way I initially intended to ever be covered by the national press, but Editor & Publisher called me this morning to discuss the picture I posted of me holding a gun.

They wanted to know what the reaction was, how my editors reacted, all that inside baseball stuff that other journalists want to know about other journalists who are tackling this thing called blogging.

I told them the reaction, for the most part, has been positive – and obviously my editors didn’t make me pull the picture down (I did hear that advertising was abuzz, though, too).

Most people understand the point: Firstly, to foster more of the great discussion we’ve been having here since the onset of this fine blog in October. Secondly, to make a point. People always want to peg others as being of some political stripe. Believe it or not, I’m of none. I may be holding that gun, but I’ve only ever been hunting once in my life. It’s not my gun, either. That’s what people in Idaho do, they shoot guns, and that’s what I did with family. I do realize now that the picture can be seen as fairly shocking. To me, it wasn’t, because that’s how I was raised in a state that has guns everywhere (my parents don’t have guns, but I did once have a .22 when I was a kid. We fished, mostly).

The reaction was mostly positive, save for a few anonymous trolls who aren’t invited to our little party here. I received numerous e-mails, everyone from locals to people down in Olympia, saying the discussion was interesting and thanks for posting the picture.

That’s the point. The discussion. This blogging medium allows you to be more involved with your community paper. Time and time again people have said these blogs are a great way for them to have a vested interest in their daily paper – and that’s exactly what I wanted. If I have to post a ridiculous picture of me, or something that mocks me, to prove a point, or to continue our discussions, I’ll do it.

Thanks for tuning in, and I hope you’ll stick around.

Can you use a semi-automatic for deer season?

I can see duck or pheasant hunting sure, but deer?

Personally I preferred the AK in brush(deer hunting) more then the .223.

The AK has a lot more stopping power where the .223 could go right thru if it didn't hit bone.

FYI, when hunting with a semi there is a very strict limit on clips capacity, those banana clips (pre ban) legally are for target pratice only.

AFY!!

A reporter with a gun.

Are there big implications for the field of journalism here? Very interesting reactions from your counterparts, might say something about your profession. As for me, when I saw the photo I never gave it a second thought. I've never shot anything or owned a gun, but I'd like to someday. Looks like fun.

The reaction kind of confirms some stereotypes I hold about journalists. Keep shooting, ST, you look good.

Good pic, Sam! Lots of us that grew up in Idaho have held a gun at one time or another. I am surprised by the reaction.

Good photo and I am also surprised by the reaction. Some people need to get a clue.

High-caliber objectivity

In the 18 months I've been writing this blog I've tried various ways to convince people I have no political bias. But maybe I'm just not thinking big enough: ...

An interesting day in the online world, indeed, Steve.

Actually this is a great learning experience. I think every journalist should be interviewed at least once in their life so they know how it feels for the people on the other end of their pen!

You are just going to have to post a picture of yourself drinking a latte at the food co-op to balance things out.

Gee Sam, I heard there was a ruckus about this. Seems pretty low key to me.

I know folks who are died in the wool FDR Democrats who are lifetime NRA members. Why, even Rick Larsen sponsored several national reciprocity for concealed carry bills.

Firearm ownership doesn't mean you are left wing or right wing. As I know Democrats who are NRA members, I know some Republicans who don't like firearm ownership, too. One of my hunting partners is a Democrat.

Now for a few technical details to bore everybody.
In the State of Washington, .223 is not a legal caliber for deer hunting.
Semi-auto is legal, (but i have never taken a second shot in my life.)
There is no longer a ban or pre-ban magazine. The asthetic Assault weapons Ban Sunsetted. Also, that is not a clip in the picture but a detachable magazine.
The 30.06 M-1 Garand has a clip but not a detachable magazine. (the best combat rifle ever designed in my not so humble opinion)
The British .303 Enfield has a stripper clip and a detachable magazine. The Kalishnikov has a detachable magazine but no clip. I find that the accuracy with AK's leave something to be desired, but generally are supposed to be low maintenece.

I'm interested in what other hunters favorite rifles are for deer, or elk hunting are. My favorites are lever action; 30-30 and 45-70 government respectively. I usually hunt in the rain and even the ferns are taller than I am...
Have I bored everyone yet?

Wow!!! After reading the article and some of the "national" comments...I can't believe how many people don't get the tongue in cheek aspect of blogging...they need to get a life for sure!
