A group of Bellingham elementary students in the Highly Capable Learners Program and a district employee were recently honored at the 51st state Science and Engineering Fair.
The first weekend in April, students from across the state competed in areas of scientific and engineering fields. The top two high school competitors in teh state won all expense-paid trips to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta to continue their competitions.
Jane Resick, who works with the HCL students, was named the Mary Haviland Science Teacher of the Year. The entire group from Bellingham received the Excellence in Science and Engineering School Achievement Award for the Intermediate level as well as the title of “School of the Year.”
The following students also received individual awards:
- Ken Brown, junior division first place winner for project “What variables help to maximize the trajectory of a trebuchet?”
- Lizzie Crandall, junior division first place winner for project “The effects of different leavening agents”
- Lizzie Friesen, junior division first place winner for project “Does our Sensatirity to pitch change with age?”
- Josee Kender, best of category winner and junior division first place winner for project “Do dogs smell better with shorter or longer muzzles?”

Jeffrey Nestor, junior division first place winner for project “Walking sticks”
- Tadeusz Pforte, best of category winner and junior division first place winner for project “Is there acid rain in Bellingham, WA?”
- Kira Smith, junior division first place winner for project “Are mice right or left pawed?”
