Vikings add former WSU quarterback

The quarterback competition at Western Washington University this fall got a whole lot more interesting today.

Former Washington State University quarterback Cole Morgan will be wearing the Vikings’ blue and silver this fall after spending last season as a third string quarterback for the Cougars. He signed a scholarship offer to play for Western this morning.

Morgan was a Seattle Times Red Chip recruit out of Ballard High School in 2004, but delayed entry into WSU as a grayshirt freshman until January of 2005. After redshirting in 2005, he spent last season as the No. 3 quarterback on the Cougars’ depth chart but didn’t see playing time.

He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining at WWU and should challenge for the starting position right away. Senior Adam Perry enters fall practice as the incumbent starter while former Lynden High School standout Chris Bolt was second on the depth chart during spring practice.

“I’ll be closer to home that’s one reason I decided to come to Western,” Morgan said in a phone interview. “But the big thing is I’ll have the opportunity to compete for a job. I’ll have the opportunity to see the field. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

Lintz's injury will require surgery

Meridian’s Andrei Lintz found out Wednesday that the injury to his left ankle was more serious than initially diagnosed.
In a practice last Thursday while preparing for Class 1A/2A all-state football game in Yakima, Lintz suffered what was originally thought to be a fractured left fibula, the thin outer bone that runs from the ankle to the knee
Doctors in Yakima suggested Lintz have the leg checked when he returned home. He did so Wednesday, and was told he had torn ligaments in his ankle. He’s scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday, he said, followed by about two months of rehabilitation.
“I initially thought when they x-rayed it there, that it was a broken fibula, and they said it was just that,” Lentz said. “I went to an orthopedic doctor (Wednesday), and he said he thought the ankle had shifted.”
Further examination revealed the torn ligaments, Lintz said.
Lintz graduated from Meridian earlier month after earning all-state honors in football and basketball and winning the shot put at the Class 1A state track meet. He will play football at Washington State in the fall, although his summer workout plans will be delayed.
“I thought (the recovery time) would just be minor, like four weeks,” Lintz said. “It hit me with the shock; I was pretty bummed.”
Lintz said he was supposed to report to join the Cougars in Pullman on Aug. 1. He said it’s possible he may still be able to report then and continue his rehab.

Sehome searching for new boys' soccer coach

Longtime Sehome boys’ soccer coach Jonathon Fleck has resigned from the position after seven seasons and two state championships, the most recent coming in May.

Fleck handed in his resignation shortly before the Mariners started postseason play this spring, Sehome athletic director Colin Cushman said.

Sehome has started the process of looking for a new head coach but it’s not going to be an easy task to replace Fleck, Cushman said in a phone interview.

Cushman said Fleck left to spend more time with his family.

Counting Down the Days

With the spring sports season over for area high schools it’s time to take a deep breath and begin looking toward the fall.

The high school football season officially kicks off on Aug. 20 with teams throughout the county reporting for the first day of practice.

For anyone looking to put big, black X marks on the calendar, that means high school football starts in 62 short days. The first games are scheduled for Sept. 5.

The most intriguing opening night matchups look to be Ferndale at Bellingham at Civic Stadium and Lynden at Archbishop Murphy. If the Golden Eagles stay healthy they could be playing deep into November.

Of course, fall sports aren’t just about football. Girls’ soccer, volleyball, girls’ swimming, boys’ tennis, and boys’ and girls’ cross country start practice on Aug. 25. Those sports will be in full swing beginning the week of Sept. 8.

Bob Ames back at Meridian

Bob Ames will be back on the sidelines with the Meridian football team this fall according to Meridian athletic director Chad Larsen.

The longtime Trojans football coach has reached an agreement with the Meridian School District that will allow him to remain in the classroom as a substitute teacher and on the sidelines as coach next season. Ames could not be reached for comment.

Ames, who has been a coach at Meridian since 1974, had decided to step away from coaching in May after it was determined his teaching position would be eliminated next year due to budget cuts. Ames said at the time that he felt coaching was an extension of teaching and he wasn’t interested in doing one without the other.

“We think this is a win, win, win,” Larsen said in a phone interview. “It’s a win for the kids because they get Bob back. It’s a win for the school because we get our quality coach back. And it’s a win for Bob because he gets to be on campus and do something he loves.”

Also part of the agreement is that Ames’ son, Patrick Ames, will assume the role of head football coach at Meridian in the next few years though the details of the move haven’t been decided yet. Patrick Ames is an English teacher at Meridian High School and the head track and field coach.

Sehome wins another Scholastic Cup

For the second year in a row Sehome High School has won the Wells Fargo Scholastic Cup awarded by the WIAA to the top school in each classification based on athletic and academic performance as well as sportsmanship.

The Mariners, winners of four state team championships this spring as well as numerous other accolades in the fall and winter, accumulated 1,515 points this season to win the cup in Class 2A. Tumwater finished second in the classification with 1,180 points and Pullman was third at 1,090.

The Mariners’ total was the highest of any classification. Other winners included Mead (4A), Bellevue Newport (3A), King’s, (1A), St. George’s (2B), and Odessa (1B).

Points are awarded based on participation and finish at each of the various state athletic tournaments throughout the year. The top eight schools in each of the WIAA Academic State Championship categories for each classification also receive points toward the cup.
Points are also awarded or subtracted based on the number of ejections a school has in each sport throughout the season.

Other schools finishing in the top 10 of their classification from the Northwest Conference included Burlington-Edison, Lynden, Bellingham and Squalicum. The Tigers finished fifth in Class 2A with 915 points, Lynden was sixth at 830 and the Red Raiders were eighth with 690 points. The Storm placed sixth in Class 3A with 715 points.
