Sedro-Woolley football coach resigns

Sedro-Woolley football coach Doug Preston has resigned from his position according to a story in the Courier-Times today. Preston, who took over head coaching duties with the Cubs in 2005, wanted to spend more time with his family, the story said.

The Cubs finished 2-8 last season and 1-2 in Class 3A play in the Northwest Conference. The school would like to hire a new coach by March 28th.

I wish Coach Preston the best. He was my varsity football coach at Mount Baker in 1995, and he was the first coach I had in any sport that looked past my small stature and saw the talents I had on the field. I was the smallest guy on the team. He's an amazing coach and an amazing person.

I saw the Cubs play against the Borderites the past few years. It looked like their biggest problem was not very many guys were turning out for football. I really was impressed by their head coach. I thought he always had a solid game plan ready.

Preston is a solid first rate coach. Its just too bad the Sedro Woolley community doesn't get as excited about football as it does wrestling. There are some great sports traditions in the northwest; Meridian football, SW Wrestling, MB/Blaine wrestling, Lynden/MV/Anacortes basketball, Sehome gymnastics. At least SW has one of the elite programs in something.

Coach Preston has a great mind for Football. He relates well to his athletes and it will be hard to replace him. Watching his teams play, it was obvious that they were prepared and well coached. He will be missed..ask anyone who ever played for him and they will tell you that he is a motivator and a class act.

I was a player under Preston and he is not a great coach. He got stuck in a rut playing palyers that weren't that good. If we won maybe we could forget about the rut but he lsot us so many games trust me the Sedro-Woolley Foot Ball team says good bye to him happily

Preston was not a motivator at all. His game plans sucked. how can you say he is a good coach with a 3-17 record? every one in the Sedro Woolley football program is happy to see him go. he is a good guy, just not a good coach.
