Squalicum might be known around Whatcom County for being more of a basketball school, but that could change after this football season. At least in terms of size, the Storm should be bigger than almost every team they face this season.
To put it another way, Squalicum’s likely starting defensive end is 6-foot-8. Even if he doesn’t reach the quarterback on any given passing play he can still take away half the field just by putting his hands up and blocking their vision. There aren’t a lot of teams around that bring that to the game every week.
A lot of comments have already been made about Evan Fenton on some of my other blog postings, and after watching practice on Friday, Aug. 22, I can say that most of the good things said about him appear to be true. He’s a big, athletic player who is going to make a difference at the middle linebacker position and at running back. The Storm worked on their zone coverage while I was there and he showed good footwork in his drops. He also carries his weight well and has long arms which will be good for shedding blockers.
Right now it sounds like Zach Victor will be starting at quarterback for Squalicum. He started a few games last season, but also competed with Keith Stackhouse for playing time. Injuries will likely keep Stackhouse off the field this season, but Victor looks to have improved. Having to compete for time last season will make him better this year.
I’ll be out at Mount Baker on Monday, Aug. 25 and plan to post something from the Mountaineers’ practice on either Monday or Tuesday. Also, if you haven’t done so, please vote in our Northwest Conference preseason poll. It’s something fun for the fans to do and we’ll be running the results in our high school football preview in early September. You can find the link to the poll here.
