Some words from Green Frog Owner James Hardesty in his weekly newsletter.

I have a lot of things in store for you this week. This evening we will be joined by one of my favorite brewers, and breweries, out there, Mr. Joel Vandenbrink of Two Beers Brewing Company. As part of our Brewer’s Night series, we will have several beers for you to choose from. As always, I have tried, and this time was successful, in bringing you something that you can’t find anywhere else. This time it will be a little over 5 gallons of Ascension, an 18.2% Triple IPA. It’s a real big one, folks. Other offerings: Sodo Brown Ale, Immersion Amber Ale, Hearth Winter Ale, Evolution IPA… and a couple others that will be a surprise to me as well!

Joel always shows up with lots of prizes to give away, so come down and check it out. There is something especially satisfying about supporting Washington Breweries!

I think we can get right to the music that is coming up this week. There are some great shows that should not be missed!

Wednesday, January 9: Kyle Carey and Craig Werth. 9:30pm. FREE!
Every now and then you will find a musician who has done everything they possibly could to immerse themselves in a music style. Kyle Carey is one such person. She grew up in Alaska, but the Gaelic songs of Scotland, Ireland and the Appalachians is what called to her. She studied extensively, moved to the Isle of Skye, in Scotland, and learned Gaelic fluently. If you are interested in a person who has dedicated their life to not only music, but to age old traditions, then this is your night. Kyle Carey will introduce you to Gaelic Americana.

Thursday, January 10: Kory Quinn and Tasche de la Rocha. 9:30pm. $5.
One thing I really love about folk music, Americana, roots music and the like, is that there are some traditions that come into play. These guys aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but they are paying attention to how much grease will get the wagon down the road. What is great about folk musicians who have paid attention to those traditions of old is that they are also surrounded by today. The mix of styles and influences can bring a you on a journey that is really quite nice. Kory Quinn’s music will take you on such a journey.

Friday, January 11: Petunia and the Vipers. 9:30pm. $10.
The boys are back again this month with more of their foot stomping, bootie shakin’, brand of roots music. It would surprise me if anyone that receives this email has not yet seen this spectacle of yodeling mastery, as they have played monthly for nearly four years running! But, if you have not yet seen them, then you really must do yourself a favor and come out on Friday night.

Saturday, January 12: The Crying Shame, The Ames, and Anna Cate. 9:30pm. $7.
What can I say about a band I have been watching and listening to for over a decade? They are awesome. They are what all bands should aspire to? They are really poor arm wrestlers?

I think that the very fact that not every person in this country have listened to the Crying Shame is a sign that our country is a bit messed up (okay, there might be other signs). I have witnessed the progression from what this band was (and it started out fantastic) to what it is now, which is nothing short of brilliant. The first time I ever booked them was for my wedding eleven years ago. I have booked them countless times since. They played our opening night in the new space. We have laughed together, cried together, drank more alcohol than anyone should ever drink, together. This isn’t another band at The Green Frog. This is family.

Sunday, January 13: Open Mic hosted by Misty Flowers. 8:00pm. FREE!
There you have it, folks. Another week of dreams right there in reality. The Green Frog was never a dream for me. I didn’t aspire to own and run a music venue or bar. But I am awfully glad I do. What once sounded like something that would be fun is now something I can’t live without. It is truly a pleasure to spend my time with all of you. I hope to see you very soon.
