Washington Department of Transportation workers responsible for clearing the last 2.7 miles of the Mount Baker Highway from the ski area up to Artist Point did a recon early this week and were surprised at what they saw… much more snow than usual.
Among the several practical bellwethers signalling the snow burden and thus the extent of their task is the degree of exposure of the big Artist Point parking lot outhouse, the roof peak of which in typical years by now would be visible. But not this year.
They found the restroom building still completely covered with perhaps as much as 20 feet of winter.
Also, they reported that the residual snow depth back downhill at the current road end gate in the ski area is measuring eight feet, also deeper than usual.
Despite this thick snow mantle, WSDOT workers say they will start clearing the last SR 542 switchbacks to the popular summit vista and trailheads, Tuesday, July 6 with the work expected to take as long as three to four weeks. Until then, the highway is open to the ski area and late snowshoeing in slushy snow is available in Bagley Lakes basin to Lake Ann and Herman Saddle trailheads.
For forest travelers in the North Fork Nooksack, the SR 542 Gallop Creek temporary bridge detour at the town of Glacier has a lower speed limit through the contruction zone.
Also, the lower 7.5 miles of Canyon Creek Road (FR 31) is undergoing refurbishment and will be closed starting June 21 to motor vehicle traffic from 8 a. m. to 12 p. m. and from 1-5 p. m. Mondays through Thursdays.
