North Cascades Highway closes for winter

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | December 1, 2010

State Route 20 through the North Cascades was officially pronounced  closed for the winter by the Washington State Department of Transportation Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Gates were closed and locked at 8 a.m. at Happy Flats (MP 134) on the westside above Ross Dam and at Silver Star Creek (MP 171) on the east side near Early Winters in the upper Methow Valley. Street motor vehicles are banned by law during closures however bicyclists, hikers, snowshoers  and snowmobiles frequent the route all through the winter.

WSDOT avalanche control technicians and highway maintenance personnel will begin the assessment process for the 2011 reopening in late February or early March.
