The Bellingham City Council has scheduled a public hearing for tonight (Monday, Oct. 22) on the proposed waterfront land swap with the Port of Bellingham.
Here’s the information included on the council’s public agenda. Besides the hearing at the 7 p.m. regular council session, the council has also scheduled a 2:10 p.m. committee discussion.
Port of Bellingham commissioners approved the deal last week.

lets turn the old land fill at the end of cornwall into a city park, that way we can have kids dig up the old medical waste buried there, on top of everything else buried there.
in theory at least, all the stuff will be buried pretty deep before anyone gets to play on it.
then perhaps you should go down there and take a closer look, don’t use leather gloves and get a good feel.
Hey Spy……the old landfill is managed by the port and was leased to the City of Bellingham for use as a municipal landfill from the late ’50s through early ’60s. I won’t attempt to characterize the material that was dumped there while it was a municipal landfill.
What you see now is many hundreds of yards of dredge material from Squalicum Harbor which will be used as an initial water resistant barrier (cap) many feet thick, which will then be covered with a permanent water resistant barrier then several feet of clean soils suitable for kids to play on. The edge of shoreline will be armored with rock similar to the other rock armored shorelines you see in the bay.
If you want a copy of the plan to date just send me a note.
Thanks!
