Greetings all on this day before Christmas Eve.
I’ll be working at home as it appears I should have taken my wife’s advice and gotten a flu vaccine. Woke up with a 101.7 fever and all the other common symptoms I’ve had since last week. Too bad.
If anyone has an emergency story, they can get ahold of an editor at 715-2260 or e-mail newsroom@bellinghamherald.com.
I will be trying to blog post today in between bouts of trying to get some rest. Enjoy your day!

I was under the impression, actually, AFY, that I’m just a few years past the “at-risk” stage.

Get well soon, Sam! If it’s any comfort, I got the flu shot and still ended up with the creeping crud…I think I got it at the hospital while having a baby…darn hospital…they should only let well people be there.

Have your kids had a flu shot? I heard a statistic recently that nationally 1 in 6 have/have had the swine flu. That was sort of flabbergasting as I haven’t personally known anyone who has been definitely diagnosed with any flu and only 2 (who live south)who have/have had some as yet undetermined variety of flu.
Since some circulatory problems years ago (not a heart attack), I have started getting the flu shot and just got the swine flu shot this week. I know a lot of folks who are just shining this on. The folks who believe they had it describe mostly respiratory distress during the couple of weeks they felt badly. I have also wondered if I had some immunity as a result of having a case of full blown influenza back in the 60’s that, if my Mom were still alive, I might know of what variety. I just remember being really ill and missing about 3 weeks of school in the spring of 63 in N. Seattle.
May the effects on you and your family be mild and your recovery quick. What a bummer at the holidays. I will be sending you the mental equivalent of a big steaming bowl of chicken soup. Get well.

Sam, should you need an ambulance trip to the hospital, please write an article for page A2. Would be newsworthy that the government newshound is down for a few days…..
Seriously, get better soon.

Sam,
I hope it’s not the flu!
Warning signs for secondary infection include chronic fatigue, chest and or abdomen pain.
Nyquil at night helps with the fever and pain.
I hope you feel better soon!

I hope you feel better for the holiday!
Take care and get well soon!

Forget the Nyquil, it’s addictive and will have you chasing tires like AFY. Try some of the new pseudo-fed.

Hey, chasing tires is good exercize!

Just went to the walk-in clinic thanks to a drive from my wife. No flu! I have a sinus infection and am still infectious. They put me on antibiotics and I’m supposed to be “better-safe-than-sorry” not contagious in 48 hours.
Thanks to all for the well wishes. And Andy - if I end up in an ambulance, you’ll know.

Mr Sam Taylor,
I assert that you have more than fulfilled your obligation to your editor and your community as a professional journalist.
You also have an affirmative obligation to your family.
I am confident that your career has intruded on your family’s fair share of your available time and attention countless times in 2009. And as a reward for that patience and support, your family now gets to celebrate a holiday and nurse you back to health at the same time.
Your best will always be good enough for your family, which is a claim that can never credibly be claimed by any newspaper editor or any reader.
Your family deserves a better Sam Taylor than they got this Christmas, and the rest of us got a better Sam Taylor than we deserve.
Until you are well and have spent some of that well time with your family, I am willing to muddle through without you. I ask the rest of the readers of the Herald, the blog particpants and the editorial staff of the Herald to do the same.

Apex - I appreciate the kind words, that was nice. I’m not being forced to work today. But I feel well enough despite my illness to work from home, so that I don’t spread my sickness to my coworkers. I have plenty of sick time to use where I could just lay here and do nothing, and my bosses are awesome about letting us use it. But I want to work today before this Christmas season and I really am feeling up to it, despite this sinus infection.
Thanks again for the kind words and Merry Christmas!
