Combing through the federal budget in search of strange federal spending projects has always been good sport for journalists, as well as politicians of both parties. The late Sen. William Proxmire, a Democrat, got national publicity with his “Golden Fleece” award for projects he considered absurd and wasteful.
Now, The Atlantic Monthly reports, the GOP’s Sen. Tom Coburn is targeting a $615,000 grant to the Grateful Dead Archives at UC-Santa Cruz.
One man gathers what another man spills.

Of course they will focus on small, insignificant projects like these. That way it can distract the public’s focus away from the billions in corporate tax breaks and loopholes that they allow in order to get campaign contributions.
I guess the GOP is really serious about cutting the deficit. That 615,000 will go a long way. Until either party gets serious about SS, Medicare, Medicaid and Defense, it’s all talk.

But citizen, if we make and use enough of them, the unit cost will eventually go down.
Tim,
Don’t forget all the tax “expenditures,” give-aways, and loop-holes in the tax code, which are greater than the total amount currently collected in income taxes.
