Komen Foundation official quits after Planned Parenthood funding furor

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | February 7, 2012

From Stark

The Susan G. Komen Foundation official linked to the group’s (quickly reversed) decision to slash funding for Planned Parenthood has resigned.

The Christian Science Monitor reports.

This episode is one more example of social media as a powerful new political channel. This thing exploded on Facebook a few days ago.

Are left-liberal-progressives using Facebook, Twitter etc. more effectively at this point? If that is the case, will the other side of the political spectrum catch up at some point?

I’s heard there was an opening at Netflicks if the Komen official is still looking for a job!

From what I see out there both sides are using social media pretty well!

Why do right-wing regressives need to destroy everything they touch?
What kind of ideology do they employ where cancer screenings are opposed?
Invite a Tea Party Time Bomb into your organization and failure is the only result.

  3. AFY says:

You can hear for yourselves, that Planned Parenthood in many locations do not provide mammograms for women:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aq0kBkUZbvQ

So here is my question, there’s a lot of women that comment on this board, any of you ever have a mammogram at Planned Parenthood?

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  4. AFY’s video is a fake made by an anti-choice zealot named Lila Rose.

    Newsweek – Feb 6, 2012
Lila Rose: The Woman Who Sparked the Planned Parenthood Flap
… The group has also released tapes aiming to show that Planned Parenthood is lying about providing breast-cancer screening. In them, callers ask clinics if they can come in for mammograms, and are either told no or offered referrals. Planned Parenthood, like most private gynecologists, sends patients to radiologists for mammograms, and not all Planned Parenthood clinics have mammogram-funding programs. But for Planned Parenthood’s enemies, the recordings seemed sufficient to show that the organization is involved in fraud. “Did you see our Mammosham investigation?” Rose tweeted. “Some people are saying that it was part of the reason Komen defunded PP.”

This time Planned Parenthood and its allies successfully fought back. Often though, they’ve found it difficult to clear a path through the miasma of misinformation. Trying to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funds last year, Indiana Republican Rep. Mike Pence said, “Every American should be shocked that an employee of the largest recipient of federal funds under Title X has been recorded aiding and abetting underage sex trafficking.” Stopping such misinformation from proliferating is next to impossible. Rose’s tactics “create doubt in people’s minds,” says former Planned Parenthood president Gloria Feldt. “Anything that creates doubt in people’s minds has some impact.”

    Whether Lisa is a fake; depends on what side you are looking from, it’s appears;

“Lila Rose is a student activist at UCLA who has dedicated herself to building a culture of life and ending abortion. At age fifteen, Lila founded Live Action, which is now a growing nonprofit that uses new media to educate the public, with several chapters in California. Lila serves as Editor in Chief of the national pro-life magazine “The Advocate.” Lila has also launched several successful undercover investigations exposing racism, statutory rape cover-up, violation of parental consent law, and medically inaccurate counseling at Planned Parenthood. Her work has revealed new evidence to build a strong case against the abortion industry and lobby. Lila is an international pro-life speaker and frequent guest on television and radio programs….

But the proof is in the pudding, you answer this question; how many woman right here in Whatcom have gotten mammograms at Planned Parenthood and if the answer is none, then this proof shows that Planned Parenthood pudding ain’t what they pretend it to be at least here in Whatcom, IMHO. And I would bet you it is not much different anywhere else in this country. If women are getting mammograms then that should prove their pudding has some meat in it!

If all they are doing is referral, IMHO that is not the same as giving mammograms as some of their representatives have implied!

For the record I am pro choice about “EVERYTHING”!!!, a woman or her doctor should never be made criminal about their mutual medical choices by government but I also believe that a baby is a baby before they are born and their choice should also be considered in the equation if at all possible. IF only they could speak for themselves. Therefore abortion should be the very last resort and not the first consideration, unless maybe rape and pure evil is involved.

It is also my opinion that Planned Parenthood may do a lot of things but mammograms is not one of them unless someone has ever had one done by one of their facilities of which they are well funded and many. If they don’t do them they shouldn’t lie about it, bottom line!

One thing I have always wondered about was who at the Komen Foundations dreamed up the pink boxes of KFC fried chicken.

  7. AFY says:

“The reality is that Planned Parenthood—with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion—does little in the way of screening for breast cancer. But the organization is very much in the business of selling abortions—more than 300,000 in 2010, according to Planned Parenthood. At an average cost of $500, according to various sources including Planned Parenthood’s website, that translates to about $164 million of revenue per year….

Planned Parenthood is very far from the uncontroversial organization the Susan G. Komen Foundation aspires to be. According to its most recent annual report, for 2010, Planned Parenthood sells abortions to nine out of every 10 pregnant women who come to its clinics. And it’s known throughout the country as an implacable and aggressive opponent of any meaningful restrictions on deliberate feticide….

Maybe with their 1 billion dollars, planned parenthood could do a itty bitty more in screening for breast cancer, if they are taking money from the Komen Foundation, don’t you know!

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  8. As usual, AFY, you’re long on opinion and short on facts…

Some things you may not know about Planned Parenthood:

    — Most of its services — 71 percent — are for birth control and testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Abortions made up 3 percent of its services in 2010. Cancer screening accounted for about 15 percent.

    — Most of Planned Parenthood’s clients are too young for breast cancer screening under most guidelines

    — Komen paid for just 170,000 of the more than 4 million clinical breast exams Planned Parenthood performed nationwide over the last five years, and just 6,400 of Planned Parenthood’s 70,000 mammography referrals in that time.

    — The government has long paid Planned Parenthood for services related to cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. The group gets federal and state money for breast cancer screening service through a program for poor and uninsured women.

  9. AFY says:

SL, has Planned Parenthood actually done any mammograms in our county or this state?

I just went to their(PP) official website and when you go to mammograms, this is what it says:

Where Can I Get a Mammogram? Ask your health care provider, health department, or staff at your local Planned Parenthood health center about where you can get a mammogram in your area.

    http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/womens-health/mammogram-21195.htm

Sounds like to me they only refer and in my book that is not the same as giving/doing them as their representatives have implied.

    And there is this;

“For years I used to buy and sell X-ray equipment. I was the Director of Acquisitions for a successful NYC company. Trust me: Planned Parenthood does not own a single mammography machine. I personally phoned every single clinic, health care center and hospital in the United States. It was my job to locate mammography machines between the years of 1992 to 1993 and 1995 to 2000, and buy them, and resell them to buyers. I had the entire directory of hospitals. I had the entire directory of clinics. I had lists of each single diagnostic imaging machine in the state of Colorado and its owner’s name and address My database had 15,000 locations in it (the largest and most complete database in the industry). Every single day, my staff and I phoned every one of these locations asking if they had any mammography machines for sale, and to list and spec out all of their other equipment. I never, in all of my years in the X-ray business EVER saw a Planned Parenthood center listed in one of those lists. Planned Parenthood has been lying for many years that it offers mammography screening…..

    http://www.patheos.com/blogs/yimcatholic/2012/02/eyewitness-account-planned-parenthood-never-had-mammography-machines.html

So SL do you agreed that Planned Parenthood does not do mammograms or not?

I will not argue that they do many things but mammograms is not one of them, right?

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  10. AFY says:

Methinks when the Komen Foundation finally figured out that PP didn’t do the mammograms they pulled their funding and me also thinks that after the Komen Foundation got hit by the pressure of the advocates of PP it realized they had just stepped on a sacred cow that they better step right off of if they wanted to continue having a foundation!

Does anyone else have a reason why the Komen foundation pulled their funding? Or are we now also gonna pretend that they never pulled their funding at all?

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  11. AFY says:

A little bit more on why The Komen Foundation did what they did:

“After Lying About Providing Mammograms, Planned Parenthood Outraged That Breast Cancer Charity Cuts Off Grants

Last spring, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards went on CNN and claimed that if Congress cut off funding to Planned Parenthood “millions of women are going to lose access, not to abortion services, to basic family planning, you know, mammograms.” …

…But as Nancy Brinker, founder and CEO of Komen foundation, says in a video, Komen came out with a new set of standards this year designed to free up dollars for “higher impact programs.”

“Wherever possible, we want to grant to the provider that is actually providing the lifesaving mammogram,” she said…

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/after-lying-about-providing-mammograms-planned-parenthood-outraged-breast-cancer-charity-cuts-grants_620875.html

BTW Nancy Brinker was not the official thrown to the wolves!

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  12. Now you’re moving from opinion to dis-information… Brinker keeps changing her story and rightwing hacks keep making up lies about Planned Parenthood.

… Let’s look at the Dec. 16 internal memo in which the foundation articulated its new funding criteria:

[S]hould Komen become aware that an applicant or its affiliates are under formal investigation for financial or administrative improprieties by local, state or federal authorities, the applicant will be ineligible to receive a grant. … [V]arious authorities at both the state and federal levels are conducting investigations involving [Planned Parenthood] and some of its local chapters, and the organization is barred from receiving government funding in numerous states. Under these new criteria, Planned Parenthood will be ineligible to receive new funding from Komen until these investigations are complete and these issues are resolved.

Under these rules, if you want to create a controversy that will lead Komen to defund an organization, all you have to do is open an investigation. That’s what happened to Planned Parenthood. On Sept. 15, Rep Cliff Stearns, R-Fl., chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations within the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, sent Planned Parenthood a letter announcing that the committee was investigating Planned Parenthood’s “use of federal funding and its compliance with federal restrictions on the funding of abortion.” Under the rules articulated three months later by Komen, this letter instantly made Planned Parenthood ineligible for any Komen grant.

Stearns’ letter was sent on the official stationery of the energy and commerce committee, with the name of the committee’s ranking Democratic member, Henry Waxman, D-Calif., displayed in the upper right-hand corner as an imprimatur. But Waxman didn’t sign the letter. In fact, two weeks later, Waxman and Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., the ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, sent Stearns a letter denouncing his investigation as a partisan sham. “This year, House Republicans have voted twice to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding,” they observed. “You strongly supported these efforts, stating that ‘defunding Planned Parenthood should be a fiscal and moral priority for Congress.’ ”

In sum, the investigation was created by one man. Using his committee stationery, he converted his politics into a controversy, triggering Komen’s grant-refusal criteria.

Brinker is beginning to understand the problem. In her statement on Friday, she wrote, “We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political.” …

  13. AFY says:

SL, still can’t admit that PLanned Parenthood doesn’t do mammograms?

You can attack me, Brinker or whoever but that does not change the truth!

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  14. Camille says:

My daughter is a college student.
Under the assumption that her deadbeat dad was still providing medical insurance for her, she went to her regular doctor for a routine exam. Her doctor ordered some routine tests.
Later, she was billed $500.00 for the exam and tests because she no longer had insurance.
Had she gone to Planned Parenthood it would have only cost her $50.00 for the same exam, same tests.
Her visit had nothing to do with an abortion.
Well, ‘Dad’ has a surprise coming to him, too, when he finds out that he has to start paying alimony again.

  15. AFY says:

    Interesting:

“The vicious fury of pro-abortion lobby is the real story of the decision of the Komen foundation to detach itself from grants to Planned Parenthood.

So iconic is the status of Planned Parenthood that, in the wake of this decision, numerous abortion supporters decided to punish Komen….

But Komen did not completely cut Planned Parenthood out of current funding or exclude Planned Parenthood from future funding. Nor did they reverse the original decision and decide to re-fund Planned Parenthood in the future. They merely reversed their decision in favor of considering Planned Parenthood’s eligibility for future grants. The Komen foundation is rightfully concerned that Planned Parenthood is the focus of federal and state investigations for financial irregularities, fraud, sex trafficking, failure to comply with laws requiring reporting minor’s sexual abuse and parental notification for abortion, as well as substandard medical care….

..The incidence of breast cancer in younger women has increased, mainly due to lifestyle changes such as later childbearing, hormonal contraception, and induced abortion, although breast cancer can certainly occur without any of these factors. A recent study on linking the deadliest type of premenopausal breast cancer to the pill is a case in point.

It has always seemed ironic that Komen would give grants to Planned Parenthood, whose medical practices and promotion of unhealthy life styles are instrumental in the increase in breast cancer that has been evident in past decades….

Maybe there is more to this story than I thought!

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  16. AFY says:

You know something Camille, I bet most of those people who have a problem with Planned parenthood getting government funding wouldn’t have a problem or as much of one if only Planned parenthood was doing everything they do but the abortions, just a hunch!

    AFY!!theheelotsheepdog!!!

  17. Camille says:

Well, AFY, abortions are nothing new; woman have been having abortions since long before marriage was invented.
Since abortion became legal, thousands of women’s lives have been saved because they have access to this medical procedure under sterile conditions by skilled medical personnel and no longer have to subject themselves to botched back alley procedures.
Making the decision to terminate a pregnancy is not something that most women take lightly.
Keeping the right to choose whether to carry a pregnancy full term or to abort an undeveloped fetus is a right that most women take very seriously.
Abortion is a Women’s health issue, something to be decided on between the patient and her doctor.
If you’re not a doctor or pregnant you should probably just butt out and find some other red herring to toss out at every election.

  18. AFY says:

Camille I don’t disagree with anything you have said, BTW the butt out should cut both ways, IMHO!
