Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna has announced a filing of a federal civil suit against Internet marketing company Adscend Media LLC, accusing the Delaware-based firm of playing a key role in placing misleading links on Facebook users’ sites.
Attorneys for Facebook, the reigning giant of social media, announced their own lawsuit against Adscend at a joint press conference with McKenna in Seattle Thursday, Jan. 26.
Asked if “scam” was too strong a word to describe Adscend’s Facebook advertising ploys, Assistant Attorney General Paula Selis said no.
“I would definitely call this a scam,” Selis said. “This company is misleading you into thinking you’re getting a message from a friend.”
But those messages are installed without that friend’s knowledge, and their purpose is to promote some advertiser’s product while generating revenue for Adscend on a pay-per-click basis, Selis and McKenna said.

Thank you to Att. Gen. McKenna and Facebook for identifying the problem and seeking a resolution. Such business practices not only lead to unwarranted consumer costs, but it also unnecessarily opens doors to regulation and control of the internet.
Why doesn’t Mr. McKenna go after the robo signed and illegal foreclosures in Washington State?
And how about Banks using MERS to destroy the property records of all the Counties in Washington?
Good point, Tim. It has been quite awhile since McKenna (and most of the rest of the AGs across the US) have been heard from on this issue. I do see periodic stories indicating that efforts to reach some kind of settlement are going nowhere. This whole issue gets increasingly radioactive politically. I doubt many AGs want to stand up in front of the microphone to explain their big settlement with the mortgage and loan-servicing industry.
