Mount Vernon mayor blocks liquor license for Hispanic business downtown

The Skagit Valley Herald reports that Mount Vernon Mayor Bud Norris has blocked a liquor license for a proposed Mexican restaurant and tequila bar downtown–and some people see a connection between that action and the mayor’s earlier moves to remove the Spanish language from city signs and phone systems.

Among other things, Norris ordered the city library to replace a sign that had the word “biblioteca” on it, and the new sign apparently cost the city $5,000.

You always have to wonder when competition is being denied what part the competitors (those with liquor license’s already) are playing, they are the ones who will benefit the most.

Isn’t this the numb ones who gave the ‘key to the city’ to Glenn Beck?

  3. g.h.kirsch says:

“Some of my best friends are Mexican.” said Morris (the mayor)

Wher’ve I heard that one before?

You can pick our fruit, mow our lawns, wash our dishes, but remember your place, eh, Bud!

  4. Cantharellus says:

Good grief, what an embarrassment. When did Mount Vernon become so backward as to elect someone like Bud Norris? Or is it just another case where only the right wing is bothering to participate in politics? At any rate, Norris has done more to hurt business in Mount Vernon than anyone in memory. The tea party in action.

  5. Camille says:

This imbecile sounds like the Bud Nichols guy over in Kennewick, almost verbatim; interbreeding will do that.
Will this be the 2012 platform for the te’ fiesta?

  6. Camille says:

Sorry, that would be the Kennewick guy Oren Nichols, not Bud Nichols.

    Hola, me llamo Juan Martinez.
    Donde esta la biblioteca?

  8. Mary says:

When I was in elementary school, my teachers had lived in Spain (not Mexico or anywhere in Latin America) and liked to put up little signs all over the classroom saying what things were in hopes we would become bilingual ourselves. Oh well, I guess times have changed. What is wrong with a sign advertising the library? Aren’t books good things?

  9. Let Calle Open! says:

I guess Mount Vernon doesn’t want new businesses that create jobs in their town?

Edgar and Carlos successfully run 2 other respected restaurants around Washington and have incredible reputations in the business.

This is either racism or cronyism (the owner of the bar across the street, Draft Pics, is one of the Mayors biggest donors), or both!

Give these young entrepeneurs a chance!

  10. Proud_Progressive says:

Yes, this is the same mayor who ignored vehement objections from citizens in general and the business community in general and declared Glenn Beck day on that lunatic’s birthday. I thought the sane, rational people of Mr. Vernon would have put him out to pasture long ago!

  11. Richard May says:

Paying $5000 unnecessarily to ethnically clense a public library sign is a total disregard for fiscal conservatism in the middle of an economic crisis. Putting moral battles above economic ones will drive away support from a mayor like this.

For every one vote this guy gained from people who dislike the growing hispanic presence, he lost two votes by taxpayers who don’t want their $5000 wasted over this kind of thing.

  12. Dusty Gulleson says:

He’s not running for reelection. The business can reapply in January when there is a more sane mayor.

Stunning that a mayor can unilaterally block licenses.

  13. Camille says:

I’ve heard tell, in a casual conversation, that all the mayoral candidates in Mt. Vernon are Progressives, or at the very least there are no Conservatives running.
I hope it’s not too late for that poor city to wipe off all the egg from its’ face on account of the current Mayor’s disgraceful behavior.
    Glenn Beck Day anyone??
