Newt Gingrich takes dovish stance on immigrants and gets blasted

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has staked out a comparatively moderate position on illegal immigration, and that has made him a target for some of his rivals in a party where “amnesty” has become a dirty word for many.

In this account from the Los Angeles Times, Gingrich says a family values party should not advocate policies that would break up the families of immigrants who have violated immigration laws.

“I’m prepared to take the heat in saying: Let’s be humane in enforcing the law,” Gingrich said.

Michele Bachman and Mitt Romney wasted no time in making sure that everyone noticed what Gingrich was saying.

Has Gingrich doomed his candidacy by suggesting that he is NOT in favor of expelling every last illegal immigrant in the country?

Newt is last century’s politics. Ron Paul will win the general election EASILY if the clueless GOP “leaders” could just figure it out. I don’t know one Republican or Conservative in any way that will vote for Obama over Paul. But I do know TONS of non Republicans across the political spectrum that will vote for Paul over Obama.Including me.

Newt, Take a bath and get a real Job.

I’m not aiming to expel every last illegal, but I would like to start with expelling all illegals who are members of gangs and their families along with them.

the post above by “me” is 100% accurate.

…but major parties seldom put their agendas and cronyisms aside. It was very unlikely that Obama would surpass Hillary in the 2008 primary, and even less likely that Ron Paul will surpass the usual suspects this coming year.

Finally, a GOP contender which has the guts to take a humane position on illegal immigration.

This is a breakthrough which should be embraced by all who care about immigration, regardless of which political club they belong to.

“Whether his recent rise in the polls is lasting or not, Newt Gingrich has already shifted Campaign 2012 for the better. The feisty former speaker of the House has reminded us through his debate performances that knowledge is an important part of a president’s work.

That a president must know something seems obvious. But our nation’s opinion writers (myself included) have often ranked knowledge behind a candidate’s character, electability or even, simply, novelty. And in the past voters have often done the same….

“This time voters want someone who can work the solutions to the intractable problems,” Douglas Schoen, the author and pollster, told me. “This time they also like that someone is taking on the media, precisely because taking on the prognosticators means you can take on Washington.”….
