Pete Kremen says Pike’s lake move is political…

Written by | The Bellingham Herald | January 10, 2011

From John Stark

…What’s more, the Whatcom County Executive contends that Mayor Dan Pike is worried about the potential mayoral candidacy of former State Rep. Kelli Linville, the longterm Democratic incumbent who lost a close reelection battle with
Republican Vincent Buys last November.

Kremen was reacting to this.

“This seems very contrived,” Kremen said of Pike’s petition to the Washington Department of Ecology.

Kremen contended that Pike’s move may be an attempt to score political points with city residents in an election year at City Hall.

“There is a groundswell of support and indications that Kelli Linville may be challenging Pike for the mayor’s position this year,” Kremen said.

We haven’t had a chance to check this with Linville yet. Remember, this is blogging.

This is the first time we’d heard that Linville might have an eye on City Hall. Up to this point, the big rumor was that she would run for County Executive.

In a recent interview with Sam Taylor, Linville was noncommittal about her political future but didn’t rule anything out either.

    Mildred… studies (and my own personal experience) indicate that when drivers are panicked about a $250 fine, they stomp on the brakes at the first sign of a yellow light. This increases the chance of a rear end collision.

    So it’s not simply a matter of following the law.

  4. AFY says:

    BTW with people speeding up to get thru intersections, it’s also will put pedestrian and people on bikes in more danger!

  5. Mildred says:

    Richard: First of all the fine is $124 the only way it goes to 250 is a school zone violation of going over the speed limit by 25 miles per hour if people are doing that they need to go to jail.

    It is amazing how ill informed you are AFY!!!

    Mildred if reading valid studies from The Washington Post, KATU, Winnipeg Sun, and KCAL makes one ill informed, I’s plead guilty as charged!

    AFY: Facts are on my side, Seattle,New York, Palm Springs area have cameras all over the place and no problems at all. You are reading crap from newspapers and TV stations that are against cameras
    period. And bottom line the Bellingham City Council will review in 1 year the normal contract is for
    3 years at least they were smart enough to look at it again in 1 year. Give me a break the nea sayers
    on this are way out of line.

  9. AFY says:

    No problems in Seattle for sure;

    Traffic judges have declared the camera set-up illegal at a busy intersection near the University of Washington and they’ve tossed tickets out, but the city is still ticketing unsuspecting motorists.

    No problem in New York for sure;

    …a former judge who’s suing Nassau County, claiming red-light cameras are unconstitutional.

    Last fall, Lee Levine of Long Beach was taking her 100-year-old mother to see a doctor when the light at an intersection changed to yellow, and then, she said, quickly to red. She didn’t want to slam on the brakes so she went through the light.

    A few weeks later, she received something in the mail.

    “It’s a notice of liability,” former Judge Samuel Levine told CBS 2′s Don Dahler.

    Her husband is now fighting it and another red light violation his wife got, saying the process violates a number of rights.

    “The presumption is, you’re guilty. That’s a serious violation of the United States Constitution,” Samuel Levine said…..

    “Cities from Heath, Ohio, to College Station, Texas, have banned red-light cameras, as detractors argue that the safety measure actually causes accidents and is merely a revenue-generator….
