When President Barack Obama announced he would “defer” the deportation of some illegal immigrants and allow them to apply for temporary work permits, he was denounced for enacting “amnesty” without action from Congress. Now, Mitt Romney says he has no immediate plans to undo Obama’s action, if elected.
In an interview with the Denver Post, Romney said he plans to take no action against those who have already taken Obama up on his offer of a two-year work permit. To qualify, “those eligible must have arrived in America before they turned 16, be under the age of 30, have been living in the country for five or more years, and be either in the military, in school or graduated,” acording to The Post.
The Post story also quotes an Obama spokeswoman saying that Romney’s recent remarks to the Post have not clarified his position on immigration issues, and on whether he would enact the hard-line measures that some Republican factions would prefer.
UPDATE: Immigration attorney Margaret Stock notes that Romney misused the term “visa” in his remarks. The temporary work permits authorized by the Obama administration are not visas, Stock said.
UPDATE 2: Here’s the New York Times take on this episode, with expanded remarks from Margaret Stock.
UPDATE 3: Stock also suggested this link to a page on the State Department website, explaining exactly what a visa is.

Yeah… Okey Dokey Mittens… we’ll check back with you in 15 minutes and see where you stand then…
The We the Tea People aren’t going to like this.
Hope the Koch brothers don’t stop throwing their money away.. I mean,
contributing to the campaign.
Lefty’s right though, and as Mitt said recently, “it’s early yet..”
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
What’s the difference in flipping and evolving? Obama has evolved on so many of his campaign promises he doesn’t know if he should come or go. I say GO
Trouble is Mittens is such a pathological liar that nothing he promises means a thing…he has zero principles and flip-flops faster than a whirling dervish.
A whooooollllllleeee lot of projection going on.
As usual.
I don’t agree with the way that President Obama essentially enacted the Dream Act by executive order rather than legally through Congress, but I do agree with Mitt Romney when he says that the US government should honor those permits that are issued. His position is not so much about immigration reform as it is about not jerking people around. Another reason to vote for Mitt Romney.
Mitt isn’t flipping, he is doing what he thinks is morally right. For a president to grant temporary work permits to those who qualify and then take those permits away just because a different person is in the White House would be wrong.
He is just trying to make himself look better to the hispanic vote, where he is losing, like 80%-20%….
So let’s see, where are we today, Mittens? down 10+ in the national polls, down 100-0 or 90-10 in the women’s vote, and 100-0 in the african-american vote….what’s left? Oh yeah, crusty, old, white, rich people, and idiots who don’t know any better.
You are going to get creamed, and I am going to laugh….enjoy your last month of campaigning, because it is going to be a landslide! Can’t wait for the debate tomorrow. It is going to be thrilling to watch Mittens get his arse handed to him on national TV!
How are you going to answer the 47% question, Mitt? Ummm, I didn’t mean those people.
How are you going to answer your tax plan queston, Mitt? Ummm, don’t want to get into the math, I will tell you when I get in the office.
How are you going to deal with the concern’s over women and their bodies? Ummm…..
the list goes on and on…it is going to be exceptional!
To know obama is to NO obama
Too bad. If the 2003 Romney had run in this campaign from the start (after telling the Tea Folks to “shove it”) he would have had a decent shot.
RC have you been getting into Mitt’s secret trove of zingers for tonights debate?
Anything that begins with: Mitt Romney promises…..is essentially meaningless as he is a pathological liar with zero ethical constraints in place. We know Mitt Romney very well here in Massachusetts and to know Mitt is to loathe him.
“They are folks that have already availed themselves of it, who have paid money to the federal government. I don’t know how you undo that,” Rubio said in an interview before speaking to a crowd at a Romney rally. “I don’t think it would be fair, after they’ve already paid and begun to live, to now yank that from underneath them.”
“The most important thing Romney has said is that he wants to find a permanent solution to their problem,” he said. “In a blink of an eye, this two-year period will go by, and these kids don’t want to be here for two years; they want to be here for the rest of their lives. We have to find a solution to their problem that’s humanitarian, that solves their problem but that doesn’t encourage illegal immigration in the future.”
