In an email message, Washington State Democrats chairman Dwight Pelz points out that the state organization has not endorsed the reelection of Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike, although the state organization’s name appeared on a pro-Pike flier sent out by Washington Conservation Voters.
Here is the email from Pelz:
Date: November 5, 2011
To: Interested Parties:
From: Dwight Pelz, Chair, Washington State Democrats
Re: Endorsements in the Bellingham Mayoral Race
“In light of recent confusion caused by a campaign mailer funded by the Washington Conservation Voters in support of Mayor Dan Pike, I would like to clarify that the Washington State Democratic Central Committee has not endorsed a candidate in the Bellingham mayoral race.
“Washington state law requires Washington Conservation Voters to disclose the top five donors to a PAC, in this case the Washington Conservation Voters Action Fund, on such campaign mailers. The Washington State Democratic Central Committee (State Party) did donate to the WCV Action Fund, but not for the purpose of sponsoring any specific mailer. This should not be misinterpreted as support for or an endorsement of Mayor Pike.
“Comments by supporters of Mayor Pike on Facebook referencing that the Washington State Democrats funded this campaign mailer are misleading. The decision to send this mailer was that of WCV. Again, we have not supported any candidate in this race.
” We wish both candidates the best of luck as we enter the final weekend before Election Day.”

This crazy new top two system.
Watch, they’ll probably be some insinuating that the Pike campaign and/or it’s supporters of
being purposefully misleading.
Of course that would be nonsense as the statements regarding the funding appears to be factual.
The new system will likely have bugs like this for years..
There is no “crazy new top two system” in the nonpartisan mayor’s race.
Worst_Ever_43: Correction: There’s is not a top-two system in this mayor’s race. Your statement to the contrary is false. The comments made on Facebook were ipso facto misleading. The FB comments forwarded to Mr. Pelz specifically mentioned “endorsement,” which is simply not true. So, no, it’s not nonsense. Whether that was purposeful or not? I suspect it was, given how boldly misleading the Pike campaign and WCV have been on other issues—notably the whole coal train business.
Lastly, I know for a fact that the State Party is very upset with WCV. WCV should not be expecting any more money from the State Party, given the unethical behavior of the Whatcom Chapter.
Just for the sake of accuracy…
what Pike’s campaign manager posted to facebook, included this phrase :
“…Our opponent got Republican endorsement yesterday, we get the WA State Dem Central Committee funding a mailer today!…”
Pike’s manager is generally an ethical, honest, and well meaning person, but this statement was not in top form.
1. Linville got endorsement from some specific bellingham Republican precinct officers, not from “the party”. So, it would have been more clear to say “Our opponent got endorsements from some local Republican officers yesterday”
2. I am a vote on the WSDCC, and I assure you that the party sent $7000 total to the statewide organization of WCV, with zero stipulation or advance approval over any of the 72 campaigns that WCV happens to have endorsed. More accurate would be “we got a mailer funded by WCV, who is contributed to by the WA State Dem Central Committee”
