Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat compares Bellingham’s plastic shopping bag ban to the one that voters shot down in Seattle, and finds it much more palatable.
The big factor: Seattle’s failed ordinance charged a 20 cent fee for use of bags, and the money–millions of dollars–would have gone to the city. Bellingham’s ordinance lets the merchant keep the nickel fee that is mandated here, enabling the merchants to recover their bag costs while encouraging consumers to bring their own bags.

…from the article: “On Monday, Bellingham banned plastic bags, becoming the area’s second city to do so, after Edmonds. It did it with almost none of the fighting and bitterness that attended Seattle’s own failed efforts to go bagless back in 2009.
Bellingham’s law passed its City Council unanimously. Very few people squawked about big or overreaching government. Even the grocery stores got on board, urging the council ”
…apparently, Dan hasn’t read the Herald blogs, and only seven people in B’ham got to vote on the ordinance….
Federal, State, and local governments will just keep taking our choices away…if they are not stopped by either protesting/boycotting or at the ballot box. Next we will all need glasses to read with the only light bulbs available for purchase. Speaking of light bulbs I wonder if anyone has bothered to analyze how many of the fluorescent bulbs are just thrown into the garbage. My bet is 85-90%.
Let’s keep complaining about “big brother”,
and do nothing about it….
That’s what ” just bloging” is…
Doing nothing…
Cheers.
