Todd Myers, author of “Eco-Fads: How the Rise of Trendy Environmentalism is Harming the Environment,” will speak at the Northwest Business Club on the environment on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Myers, from the Washington Policy Center, is one of the leading experts in free-market environmental policy, according to the Northwest Business Club press release. He’ll speak at noon at the Elks Lodge, 710 S. Samish Way

“We expect that he will expose the pressures that cause politicians, businesses, media and even scientists to fall for trendy environmental fads; fads that are often destructive to long term objectives of improving the environment for all of us,” according to the release.

“Trendy environmental fads”??? So now the business community presumes to know more about improving the environmental than the environmentalists? I would provide a more in depth response, but I am busy writing a book advising business owners how to maximize profit.

“Green buildings, biofuels, electric cars, compact fluorescent lightbulbs and a variety of other technologies are touted as the next key step in protecting the environment and promoting a sustainable future. Increasingly, however, scientific and economic information regarding environmental problems takes a back seat to the social and personal value of being seen and perceived as “green.”…

The desire to “be green” can cloud our judgment, causing us to place things that make us appear green ahead of actions that may be socially invisible yet environmentally responsible….

    Americans can’t do what’s smart
for fear a Republican Businessman will accuse them of being a poser?
    Spare me.
A trendy Eco-Fad that causes more harm than good?
Conservatives that write their own science might qualify.
The practice of allowing a Free-Market to set environmental policy is another
since no such market exists anywhere on the Planet and,
    even if it did,
the health and welfare of your community would be its last concern.
It’s fine to want to make money.
It’s even fine to deny any fact that might impinge on your profits.
But don’t pretend your greedy spiel has anything to do with saving the world we live in
while you earn a living marginalizing those that do.
You might also think a smart Business consultant would figure out ways to get rich pandering to the fad,
not whining to the choir about how unfair it all is to their bottom line.

Can anyone weigh in on using a new Chevy Volt?

My understanding is that the electricity we use is partly generated by burning coal. Kinda takes the saintliness away of using an electric car. Anyone know the breakdown on that?

    Hi Richard:
Thirty-six percent of Puget Sound Energy’s electricity comes from coal: http://pse.com/aboutpse/EnergySupply/Pages/Electric-Supply.aspx

Interesting website that has an opinion on the Volt, don’t ya know:

…despite the Chevy Volt costing taxpayers $250k per vehicle to produce, despite Big Government purchasing 1-in-every-4 hybrids sold, despite taxpayers losing $9 billion on GM’s IPO loss last year, despite Americans being forced to shell out an additional $7,500 worth of tax and ‘clean-car’ incentives for every Volt purchased, despite GMs’ $50 billion bailout, despite bankrupt GM distributing manager bonuses up to 50% of their salaries, despite GM spending $4 million on lobbyists in just 3 months due to horrible Volt sales, despite GM covering corporate transgender surgeries, despite perfectly timed hype from Motor Trend naming the government-subsidized Chevy Volt as ‘Car of the Year’ without a single Volt ever being sold, despite Chevy Volts randomly catching fire, despite…
