Precinct committee officers for the Whatcom County Republican Party met on Saturday, Dec. 8 to elect new leaders to two-year terms.
Here’s a rundown of new officers and who they succeeded:
- Chairman: Charlie Crabtree took the gavel as new county chairman immediately after being elected. He ran unopposed. He replaced Luanne Van Werven.
- Vice chairwoman: Eileen Sobjack, replacing Bill Crawford
- State committeeman: Greg Brown, replacing Crabtree
- State committeewoman: Van Werven, replacing Anne Culbertson
- Treasurer: Terry Cox, reelected
- Secretary: J.R. Johnson, replacing Brenda Hofherr
Saturday’s ballots, voted on by 105 GOP precinct committee officers, included the rest of the executive board. In addition to the six officers, above, the board consists of 10 Republicans from Bellingham and five from each county council district, for a total of 31.
Also elected was the new chairman of the 42nd Legislative District, Ryan McKee.
I’ve been told Whatcom County Democrats will elect new leadership next month.
A version of this ran online under “Local News.”

Why do they have a “committeeman” and a “committeewoman? Shouldn’t there just be two committeepersons? Am I just reading too much in to this? I guess I need to check out the Whatcom Democratic leadership page; perhaps they do this, too. Seems weird.
Sure enough, the Democrats do it, too. Huh.
@Trixi – - Gender equity is in the State law, (Chapter 29A.80 RCW – POLITICAL PARTIES) “The state committee of each major political party consists of one committeeman and one committeewoman from each county elected by the county central committee at its organization meeting.” and “At its organization meeting, the county central committee shall elect a chair and vice chair of opposite sexes.”
Thank you, Steve.
So, where you get the news to vote? Us GOP members are ready to jump ship with this dysfunctional system.. Screw the leaders they don’t represent the populous they are just puppets. Sometimes PCO’s cheat too, luckily my PCO was not one of the cheaters that opposed him.
Thanks for another great post. Where else could anyone get that type of information in such an ideal way of writing?
I have a presentation next week, and I’m on the look for such information.
wait, isn’t greg brown the guy who was unable to control his temper and became violent during a county council meeting? the picture of him assaulting some guy with a camera is all over the internet.
Greg Brown? I guess roughing up protesters must have looked pretty good on his resume.
Greg Brown stood up at a Council committee meeting and promised he would help the County identify all the people involved in the mic check… and he should know, he bullied and shoved several of them. I guess the informer does not get charged.
The best!
