The Citizens’ Forum and the Neighborhood Schools Coalition are hosting a discussion on “Neighborhood schools: how valuable are they to our community?”
Participants will discuss what public schools mean to neighborhoods, what school model is best for children, what is the school board’s obligation to and relationship with the community, and what are the economic realities of small schools.
The forum will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Fountain Community Church, 2100 Broadway. For more information, email citizensforum1@gmail.com or neighborhoodschoolscoalition@gmail.com.
Western Washington University is offering a travel course to Ghana, Africa, and anyone who is interested is welcome to apply.
The course, “Financial Capital and Social Justice,” will give students an understanding of the social implications of moving financial capital from developed countries to undeveloped countries. The trip, led by WWU Department of Management instructor Craig Mayberry, will include visits to communities impacted by World Bank and IMF projects, meetings with micro-lending agents and recipients, trips to national parks and meetings with local and international foundations.
The priority application deadline is Monday, June 1. For more information, go to www.wwu.edu/~summer or contact Mayberry at craig.mayberry@wwu.edu or (360) 441-9903.
Several Whatcom County schools recently received cash awards for their environmental programs, as part of the annual Terry Husseman School Awards program.
The program, sponsored by the state Department of Ecology, recognizes schools for developing and implementing innovative curricula, starting a new environmental program and sustaining waste reduction efforts.
Awards are given in three categories: Seed Awards, which helps schools with start-up costs for new programs; Sustainable School Award, which recognizes schools that focus on waste reduction, recycling and sustainability; and Environmental Curriculum Award, which recognizes new curricula that introduces the concepts of recycling, waste reduction and sustainability.
Monetary amounts vary from $100 to $5,000. More than $52,800 will be distributed to schools across the state this year.
Local awards are as follows:
Columbia Elementary School, Seed Award of $2,365 to help set up a school store full of sustainable school supplies.
Custer Elementary School, Seed Award of $250 to start a “Food to Flowers” recycling program.
Sehome High School, Sustainable School Award of $200 to help continue the schools recycling program.
Ten Mile Creek Elementary, Sustainable School Award of $300 to continue a composting program that reduces food and paper waste at the school.
Nooksack Valley High School, Sustainable School Award of $500 to help continue a recycling education program.
Lynden High School, Sustainable School Award of $200 to continue the school’s recycling program.
Mount Baker School District, Sustainable School Award of $2,000 to continue the districtwide sustainability program, which includes recycling and the “Food to Flowers” program at each school, and a districtwide energy awareness program.
You’ve gotta love a parade, especially the Ski to Sea parade! I go every year, and this year I thought I’d post up some photos of the local high school bands strutting their stuff.
Great performances everyone! Note, Sehome, you guys did a great job, but my camera had issues as you were marching by and I didn’t get a good photo. If anyone has one that they want to provide to post, please email me.
