Whatcom Community College student receives award

Whatcom Community College student Mike Periera was honored today by Sen. Patty Murray and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) for his work with military veterans.

Periera is one of three recipients of the 14th annual Golden Tennis Shoe Awards, an award Sen. Murray presents to individuals whose “dedication adn compassion have improved their communities and the state of Washington,” according to a news release.

Periera served six years in the military, including time in Afghanistan. He and a friend, who has since died, started a support group for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, and Periera also started the Veteran’s Club at WCC.
