5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards nominees released

The nominees for the 5th Avenue High School Theatre Musical Theatre awards were recently released, and several Whatcom County schools made the cut.

The awards, now in their 7th year, are a high school version of the Tony Awards, honoring student actors throughout Washington. This year, the Seattle theatre made selections from 82 productions and 8,200 students. There are 159 nominations given to 54 schools.

Winners will be announced at a banquet Monday, June 8 at 7 p.m. at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle.

Local nomiees are:

Outstanding Direction, honorable mention: Ferndale High, “Grease”

Outstanding Music Direction: Ferndale High, “Grease”

Outstanding orchestra, honorable mention: Ferndale High, “Grease.”

Outstanding Scenic design: Lynden Christian High, “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Oustanding Lighting Design: Lynden Christian High, “Fiddler on the Roof,” honorable metion to Lynden High School, “Beauty and the Beast.”

Oustanding Hair and Makeup, honorable mention: Nooksack Valley High, “Footloose.”

Outstanding Program Design: Ferndale High, “Grease.”

Oustanding Peformance by an Actress in a leading role, honorable mention: Lindie Ellis, Lynden High, Belle in “Beauty and the Beast.”

Oustanding Performance by an Actor in a leading role: Matt Frye, Ferndale High, Danny in “Grease.”

Outstanding Peformance by an actor in a supporting role: Brett Bajema, Lynden High, Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast;” Skyler Jones, Lynden Christian High, Lazar Wolf in “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Outstanding Performance by an actor in a featured ensemble role: Dennis Franzman, Ferndale High, Johnny Casino in “Grease.”

Oustanding Performance in an ensemble group: Ferndale High, “Burger Palace Boys;” honorable mentions to Lynden High for “Silly Girls” and Mount Baker for “Nuns” in “The Sound of Music.”

Oustanding Performance by a chorus: Ferndale High “Grease”

    Congratulations to Ferndale High School for winning the award for Outstanding Performance in an ensemble group: Ferndale High, “Burger Palace Boys” The leading performers in the ensemble group were Matt Frye (as Danny Zuko, leader of the Burger Palace Boys), Danny Stack (second-in-command as Kenickie), Erich Carlson (as Sonny), Jeremiah OBrien (as Doody), and Jameson Dickman (as Roger).
