Tea Party types would rather see money left in the pockets of all families so they can better provide for their own kids in the ways they best see fit. Most of us would like to see vouchers, so that poor families can exercise some power of choice over their decisions, rather than accepting the table scraps government has to offer them.

As to an across-the-board 2% cut in funding to all programs, there is something seriously wrong with any organization or program that can’t adapt to a 2% reduction in income. If it is that marginal in the first place, it should be allowed to die. During the recession, the company my husband works for asked its employees to take a 10% pay reduction to avoid layoffs. Managers took an even larger pay cut. It hurt, but employees recognized that it was better than killing the golden goose. Government somehow thinks it is somehow exempt from this same reality.
