Gov. Chris Gregoire has said the state will apply for the newest federal Race to the Top challenge, according to the state Department of Early Learning.

The newest competition focuses on early learning, with Washington eligible to receive up to $60 million to create a statewide early learning system.

People can track Washington’s progress in the competition here.

In all, the federal government is allocating about $500 million for the challenge. Last year, the competition started two rounds focused on overhauling state education systems. More than $4 billion was earmarked for the competition. At the end, 12 states were selected to receive funding.
